Blog Number 362

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

It has been a while hasn't it since my last real blog.  Almost 5 months have gone by it seems.  I have the day off and I have some things to get off of my chest so here it goes.

Last night was "date night" on the monthly calendar and I also slept in this morning and missed my 5 AM appointment with the treadmill.  As such I was a little concerned about the weighing in since restaurant food usually has instant weight gain as a result.  I will update the numbers next Tuesday in my weekly weight spreadsheet update but rest assured it wasn't too bad. I do have a 4th of July cookout to go to tomorrow so that should also kill any ideas of losing weight over the 3-day, holiday weekend (sigh).  Oh well.

Many times during the week I will be in a conversation or just observe something in life that reminds me of a scene in a movie.  I think a lot of guys work this way really (kind of like the Tony Dinozzo character on TV's NCIS).  This week my 7 year old daughter was singing the song, "This Old Man" and stopped mid song.and asked my wife, "What is a 'paddywhack' and why would an old man roll home?"  It is as if she could not sing a song that she did not know the meaning for.  She was quite shocked when the wife could not answer either part of the question.  This story reminded me of a scene near the beginning of "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" where Spock, Bones and Kirk are singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" around a campfire.  It comes time for Spock to join in and he does not (citing the reason as being that he was trying to ascertain the meaning of the lyric "Life is but a dream").  Does my daughter have a little Spock in her?  Maybe so.

When we moved into our house here in Kokomo, one of the first things we did was renew our library cards.  We all love the library and usually go there each Saturday morning.  Since we do not have cable (or even a TV) at home, we usually just check out movies and watch them on the computer.  I realized rather quickly that I was spending way too much time trying to find 3 or 4 movies to check out each week so I made and executive decision.  I decided to start in the A's and just watch every movie.  I made an exception list for movies that I would not watch...
  • I would not watch rated R movies that received that rating for certain reasons (nudity, excessive language, etc though violence / gore was OK).
  • I would not watch any movie that I had alreaday seen (even if the wife had NOT seen it) or any movie that the wife had scene (even if I had not seen it).  I have this thing about watching a movie that I have not seen with someone who has already seen it.  It is just not as fun.
  • I would not watch any movie that (although PG-13) appeared to have too much humor based on sexual references.  Nothing against that kind of humor, I just don't find it funny.
  • I would not watch any "movie" that was not released to theaters (made for TV movies)
I have been watching about 3 movies a week now for 2 months (except for when the wife and kids were in Texas, then I watched more) and am still in the B's mostly.  When looking for movies, I still start in the A's in case one was checked out when I last looked and I think I have watched a few C movies so far.  I am keeping a spreadsheet (I know, you are shocked) of the movies and whether or not I actually finished the movies (some were just too horrible) and whether or not I would recommend it to a friend or not.  So far here is my list (DNF denotes Did Not Finish)...
  • Across The Universe

  • All The King's Men
