Day One with no glasses. Technically just my first full day with no glasses since after around 10 am yesterday I did not wear them either. But this is definitely Blog One without glasses. It is 5:20 am and I am up so I thought I would let you know my (semi) immediate thoughts about LASIK. I was never even in the slightest bit nervous. The is partly due to me not being a person that gets nervous and partly because I was 2 days away from having this surgery last April and I got all the lead up nervousness out of the way. The staff was very nice and answered all my questions and other than one of the machines needing to be reset a few times before it worked (some tool that measured the thickness of my cornea) all went very smooth. The lady that ran that machine put a hair net on me and crammed some tissues under it right in front of my ears (she said, "They use a lot of drops and this will pevent the drops from entering your ears.") I was given some valium and benedryl to relax me and then was given a 10 minute massage on my neck and back. I sat in a nice leather recliner for a few minutes and then was escorted into the laser room. The freakiest part was the forcing of your eye to be open. They do this with some little hooks that they stick under your eyelid corners. That was a little unlpeasant but my main concern was not being able to blink if I wanted to. It turns out that this was not a problem. My eyes were so well lubricated that I never wanted to blink. The procedure took about 5 minutes per eye (this is a guess as I will discuss in a minute). Once they peel back a flap of your eye and the laser does its thing, you can actually smell your eye burning from the laser. I mentioned this to the man that was escorting me out to my car once the whole thing was over and he admitted they avoided putting that in the brochure. After the surgery I was examined (in another room) by the doctor and she had to clean the edge of the cut for some reason. Then they taped some huge clear plastic shields over my eyes, put some sunglasses on over those and sent me home. The shields had to stay on the rest of the day and all night. They need to be on my eyes each of the next 4 or 5 nights as well. I am not allowed to touch my face at all from my eyebrows to the bottom of my cheek. So far this is not that hard but we do this without thinking usually so who knows how well I am doing. I slept well on the way home and for about 4 hours after getting home. I was up for about 2 hours then took another 90 minute nap (they recommend sleeping as much as possible and keeping your eyes closes when awake). I took the valium they sent home with me since I was not tired and it was nearing 10 pm. I woke up around 2 in the morning and could actually read the clock (it is about 8 feet away and I can never read it without getting closer or putting on my glasses) so this was my first cool "I can see without my glasses" moment. I have to put antibiotic drops in my eyes for 5 days and some fake tears (over the counter stuff) for the next 6 months (4 times per day). So far I am pleased with the whole experience. My far sight will take some time to adjust they tell me (months) so I imagine it will take some time to really tell if it was worth it. I am sure I will keep you posted.
I did finish a few movies recently...
- Anastasia: With Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner how can you go wrong? This one was released in 1956 and is based on a broadway play that was popular at the time. Disney remade this movie in 1997 with Meg Ryan and John Cusack doing voices. I really enjoyed this restored version though at times the background music drowned out the main character's voices (especially early in the movie). Also, unlike some other movies from that time frame that I have watched recently, this movie was not too long (Auntie Mame was 2:20!). The ending was kind of abrupt and you could see it coming but all in all, I would recommend it.
- Get Smart: I am becoming a Steve Carell fan (and I have not ever seen an episode of The Office). I have seen enough of the old TV series to catch the references but this was not just a rehashing of the old gags with new actors. There were a few laugh out loud moments (I dont laugh out loud often so that is saying something). Other than one scene that was 5 seconds long and in extremely poor taste, the humor was pretty clean. I would recommend this one and would even let me 11 year old watch it (with a slight diversion when that one scene was coming up).
Thanks for reading my Random Thoughts.
