Dial up access is not as awful as I had anticipated. I mean, ya, it is incredibly slow but I figured I would be more frustrated waiting for pages to load. So far though I (and the rest of the family) am just glad to have internet at home again at our disposal.
I think I will devote Monday's to reviewing the movies I was able to finish during the previous week. Also I will pick some select movies from the ones I have watched since my trip through the alphabet of the library's movies as well. (Old) denotes that it was in my original list a few blogs ago and that I am reviewing from memory. (New) indicates something within the last 2-3 weeks (i.e. since the original blog listing the movies I have watched.
- (Old) Across The Universe: We watched this one a few weeks ago. It is a movie / musical based on all Beatle's songs. I actually enjoyed this one and would recommend it if this concept sounds interesting to you. There were cameos by Joe Cocker and Bono (U2) and though the story line was hard to follow at times (there were a lot of characters) it was worth keeping with it to the end.
- (Old) Alien vs. Predator: I watched this one early on in my A-Z trek. This one almost made me abandon the idea of watching all the library's movies but it did fill in the background of both the Alien and Predator movies. The action scenes were pretty cool and the story line was interesting which is more than I can say for...
- (Old) Alien vs. Predator Requiem: Wow, first of all, this movie was dark. I mean you could not see much of the action as you were in some building with no power (at night) or in a sewer tunnel most of the time. I stopped about 30 minutes in and cranked up the brightness on my DVD player. This helped with seeing what was going on but not with the plot. Also, the ending suggested yet another AvP movie could be in the works (which is fine unless the library gets a copy).
- (New) Auntie Mame: Another one of those that I would never have watched without my A-Z commitment. This one took 4 days to watch (clocking in at 2 hours and 20 minutes). It was released in the 50s sometime and follows a young boy from about age 12 to college age and his semi-crazy aunt (Mame) who he comes to live with after his father dies. Parts of it were funny but I would not recommend it.
- (New) Space Chimps: OK, this is not in the As, Bs or Cs but since the son is at camp this week, I decided to watch this with the daughter (after making a Kroger ice cream run). I was hoping since it had Patrick Warburton (from Seinfeld, Rules of Engagement, etc) as one of the voices that it would be funnier. I was wrong. The daughter seemd to enjoy it though.
- (New) After The Sunset: I cannot think of a movie with Pierce Brosnan that I have liked so I was a little concerned about this one. I was pleasantly surprised. Woody Harrelson is good as well. Brosnon is a retired diamond thief who has ruined FBI agent Harrelson's career by failing to be captured. Harrelson goads Brosnon out of retirement so he can redeem his career. Naomie Harris shows up (Tia from Pirates of the Carribean) so you can't help but wait for her to act more like a pirate.
- (New) Against The Ropes: This one was too scratched up to play on my DVD player. Pity as I had not seen Omar Epps in very many movies (Big Trouble was one) and just finished another Meg Ryan movie (City of Angels) so I had high hopes. There are a few movies that have been checked out a few too many times I guess and are in quite bad shape by the time I get to them. Oh well.
- (New) All That Heaven Allows: This one was released in 1955 and stars Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. Another one of those I would not have picked up or given a 2nd glance towards. A pretty good movie overall, no overacting, the plot moved along pretty well with just the right amount of tension. I would recommend it.
- (New) Blood And Chocolate: I gave this one about 30 minutes before I gave up. Modern day werewolf story about a young woman who works in a chocolate store. I am assuming that the title reflects her 2 great loves. The plot did not seem to be going anywhere and it was getting time for bed so we chose to abandon it.
- (New) Break-Up, The: I was looking forward to this one and it did not dissapoint. We watched it over (3) nights (like a lot of movies). The wife and I paused it several times to point out how stupid men or women are and to take sides in whatever argument was going on. Those interludes provided more laughter than the movie so if you want us to come watch it with you, let us know.
- (New) Benchwarmers, The: I new this one would be horrible going into it but hoped that there would be enough David Spade sarcasm to get me through it. We only lasted 14 minutes before ejecting the DVD. Rob Schneider had the only believable character but there was just too much crude humor (and no non-crude humor) to keep us interested. This is our new record for giving up on a movie (for those of you keeping track at home).
Thanks for reading my Random Thoughts.
