Blog Number 368

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

The week before my son went away to camp, he would point out certain "lasts" for him.  For instance, he would say, "This is my last Tuesday night with you guys before camp" or "This is the last time I will eat breakfast on a Friday morning before camp", etc.  It got quite annoying and  he was warned (multiple times) to stop driving us insane.  I am scheduled (once again) to have LASIK surgery.  My appointment was for next Wednesday afternoon but it has been moved to 9:00 AM that same day.  I have worn glasses since I was 3 years old (with the exception of a few months in my teen years when I experimented with contacts - I will save that for another blog).  But for the last 37 years or so, I have got up each morning and put on my glasses so I could see to get around.  I cannot help but mark a few personal "lasts" for me as I look forward to NOT having to wear glasses.  I keep these milestones to myself mostly (unlike my son) but I still mark them nonetheless.

I cannot imagine what that feeling will be like actually.  It has been 25 years or so since I wore contacts.  I have not owned a single pair of sunglasses in 25 years.  I walked by the sunglasses hut in the middle of the mall the other night and actually thought about stopping and looking at them (instead of passing right by with as much interest as a shop devoted to cell phones or perfume).  I got a little excited at the prospect of buying a pair of knock off designer sunglasses.  It was a strange feeling.  I don't know how quite to describe it to you.  I am sure you will hear more about my eyes soon enough in future blogs.

Recently I read an article in the local paper that explained some changes in our local library.  Among other things, our library is going to charge for borrowing DVDs (and CDs).  The cost is only $0.50 each and this is needed due to some property tax capping that is going on in our state.  I completely understand the reasons and am not particularly upset but this will definitely stop my A-Z watching of the library's catalog of DVDs.  It is just as well, there were more bad movies than good (or even mediocre).  Perhaps I should be thankful for this excuse to stop.  The changes to not take effect until August 3rd and I am at the library now (with 6 DVDs next to me ready to be checked out once I am done with this blog).  The wife and I are headed to Indianapolis today (sin niños) so I had better wrap this up.

Thanks for reading my Random Thoughts.

Jon
