Blog Number 377

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

I am thinking that my blogs are not quite what they used to be.  I have thought about this a lot lately actually.  I have come to one conclusion, my life is too good right now to be much of a blogger.  I mean, my best blogs (in my opinion) are when I am ranting on about some injustice in my life or some suffering I am currently experiencing at the hands of others (mostly my wife).  But all is going well in my life, too well for effective blogging.  I have tried to think of something to gripe about but the empty New Blog page just stares back at me.  My Buick cost $400 to fix (window motor) but I had the money put away in savings so nothing to whine about there really.  My weight loss is going well and my LASIK went so well that I could be the poster child for LASIK.  No, I really don't have anything to gripe about.  I am turning 40 in 3 1/2 weeks but I am in good health and have a nice career still.  My hair is still there.

Well there's something for ya.  My hair.  Lately I have been thinking of cutting it all off or even shaving it all off.  I could save time in the shower and in front of the mirror each morning.  I could wear a sock cap in the winter and not mess up my hair (or a ball cap now) and could just use the trimmers that I bought about a year ago for $40 to keep it trimmed up and save money on hair cuts.  There is just one problem, the wife won't let me.  I don't mean that she asked me not to, I don't mean that she said that she preferred I not do so, I don't mean that she sympathizes with me and is simply giving me her thoughts on the matter.  I mean she actually forbid it.  She says that I do not have the skull to pull it off.  I countered with "what proof do you have that the shape of my shaved head would not be adequate" and she blew off that request with a "you just don't" answer.  I was not sure how to counter that exactly.  I tried the "it's my head and I'll do whatever I want with it" or the "just let me try it and if you are right it will grow back" or the "think of the money we will save on shampoo" but none of these worked.  She also expressed concern that it might not grow back in properly "this time" as if cutting my hair down would alter its growing patterns.  It is as if she is the prosecuting attorney, the jury and the judge.  Actually, that is not that different than most discussions that we have on matters of my looks (clothing included).  She "lets me" pick out my glasses but waits until my eyes are dialated before letting me try them on.  At that point in time they all look the same on my blurry face in the mirror.  I joke that I am just a life sized Ken doll (the wife does not laugh at this comments and just nods in agreement, like that was somehow in the fine print of our marriage license).  Ken's hair never grew though so maybe I can get an exception type ruling on hair and not be in violation of this fine print agreement (I seriously doubt it).  The only exception on my hair is when I went a year without cutting it (the picture on this site is from that period).  I think she actually liked my long hair though.  One argument she offers is that she likes my hair as is and since I have such great hair, it is somehow my duty to keep it styled in some manner that meets her approval.  It is a tough burden to bear having such awesome hair.  I have always had great hair (as long as I can remember however honestly I don't remember caring about or even recogonizing that I had hair in my pre-teen years).  I find myself almost asking men who have their head's shaved or cut real close when it was that they decided to give up on their hair.  I have not gotten up the nerve yet actually to ask someone this but I just might soon.  I imagine their reasons will mimic my current desires (just tired of wasting time on it or maybe that there was too much grey which is not necessarily true in my case but I do have some grey).  I don't think however that I will hear the response "I have a great skull."

I just might do it (some night when she is not here).  Maybe I can talk the son or daughter into doing the actual trimming (so I have an accomplice to share the wrath that will surely result).  I don't wear glasses any more, I soon will be down 30 pounds and I think I deserve a new look (good skull or bad skull).  I will have to keep you posted.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

I am nearing the 100 day mark since the start of my attempt at losing weight before hitting 40.  I have spent 45+ hours on the treadmill and have walked 90+ miles.  That seems like a lot when I think about it.

One more note on my LASIK surgery.  I find myself staring at my eyes in the mirror.  I was concerned I was becoming (more) vain but then I thought about it a bit.  I have not seen my eyes in 25 years.  I mean my true eyes.  For the past 2 1/2 decades I have either looked at my eyes with my glasses on causing them to look quite large due to seeing them through the lenses of my glasses or I have looked at them with my glasses off and they appeared not only weak but a little out of focuse (since I could not see anything particularly well without my glasses).  So I am seeing my eyes as they really are for the first time in a long time.  I wonder how long it will be before this wears off.

I did finish a few more movies...
  • Memoirs of a Geisha: Wow, I new this was a good movie based on reviews but it exceeded my expectations.  I watched it over 4 days (it was almost 2 1/2 hours long).  We were about an hour into it before last night and I made the mistake of allowing the kids to watch about 15 minutes of it before putting them to bed.  They just had so many questions about what was going on.  The ending was surprising as you quite expected a sudden and sad ending and that is not the case.  I recommend this one.
  • Billy Elliot: One of the few rated R movies that I have checked out.  When I watch an R rated movie (or even PG-13), I think about what caused the rating and if those parts of the film add to the story or could have been omitted (a particularly sensual scene or perhaps strong language).  In the case of this movie (set against the background of some sort of labor strike that effected the main character's brother and father), the language (which is what casued the R rating) fits and the movie would not be believable with softer words (darn, heck, fudge, etc).  As an American I think I miss a little bit of every film that is set in England or Scotland (especially some of the more subtle humor) but I still enjoyed this one and would recommend it as well.
  • I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry: Adam Sandler movies (even PG-13 ones) can not be to my liking.  He is a funny guy to be sure but relies a little too much on the crude humor.  I was hoping that Kevin James would have a calming effect on the humor.  Giving the subject of the film (2 straight guys pretending to be gay in order to get around some technicalities) I had my concerns.  The end result though was not too bad and quite funny in places.  There were lots of cameos (and even a short extra on the DVD where Kevin and Adam talk about all of them).  I am not so sure I would recommend this one to everyone.
  • A Good Year: Wow, I am on a roll lately it seems.  Another great movie.  Come to think of it I don't think I have even seen a bad Russell Crowe film   I liked A Beautiful Mind (which we purchased from the pawn shop for $3), Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and Cinderella Man (at least the parts that I watched before it was due back at the Frisco, TX library).  Great characters surround Crowe in this one and the background shots are great (an old winery, vinyard and a large estate).  Anyway, another one that I recommend.
Well it is time to get going for the day.  I have my 1 week follow up eye doctor appointment this morning.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

I have a few minutes before a late meeting (curse you Australia people for not working US hours!).  Anyway, at the end of my day the other day, I noticed that I had a few web pages open.  These were pages that I meant to look at and read but did not quite get to due to the busy day.  Here is what was left...
  • http://www.skodalaura.co.in - I was IM'ing with a new coworker that is located in Bangalore, India.  He (or I guess a she, not sure based on the name) was telling me that their father had purchased a new car over the weekend.  I had never heard of the Skoda Laura so I found the website.  All I could gather before abandoning the page was that the motor was a diesel.
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smore - I was IM'ing with another coworker (this one was in Cordoba, Argentina) and trying to explain that we had gone to a cook out that ended with us making s'mores.  I could not describe the technique so I sent him this link.  Amazing what I did not know about this tasty treat.
  • http://news.google.com/news?um=1&ned=us&hl=en&q=slim+jim+factory+production - I had heard somewhere about the ONLY Slim Jim factory coming back online after being down for something like a month.  When I was at the gas station the other day, I did not think to see if the price of Slim Jims was up due to supply and demand economics.  I did not find a news article with the level of detail that I wanted.
  • http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/27/opinion/27harris.html - I like reading Sam Harris.  I saw from another feed that he had written and article for the NY Times.  I think I made it through 2 paragraphs.
  • http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-56385566-raqueta-head-liquidmetal-heat-antivibrador-head-funda-_JM - A link provided from (yet another) IM session (this time with someone in Buenos Aires) and he was telling me he was selling his tennis racquet online.  This must be the Argentina equivalent of eBay.  The pricing is in Argentinean Pesos (about 3.85 = $1 US) if you are interested.
Well it is about time for my meeting.

Tuesday Weigh In

Greetings,

I am really in the home stretch now.  I have 4 weeks (save 1 day) until the big Four-Oh.  I wished I would have planned my weekly updates better so that they coincided with my birthday (these updates are on Tuesdays and my birthday falls on a Monday this year).  I only skipped 1 day on the treadmill due to my LASIK surgery.  I bought 2 headbands / sweatbands to use for my treadmill / mowing activity and I am sure I look very cool while wearing them.  I hit the 25 pound milestone this morning (as you can see below).  I have this fear (based on the consistency of the Pace column over time) that I will fall a pound shy of my goal but this does not particularly upset me.  Maybe I will make it maybe I won't, either way I am very proud of my loss.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

I think I am getting used the slowness of dial up internet.  It is all a matter of managing my expectations.  Being in a different state of mind I suppose.  At any rate, I mind the waiting less now than when the "new" wore off initially.  The Buick's driver side window is stuck down now so I have the car in my attached garage.  We have not had a car in either garage since we moved in so (oddly enough) the car looks out of place in a garage.  I rarely had it in the garage in our garage in Texas either now come to think of it.  It seems that my model of car is prone to window motors failing (this will be the 3rd replacement one now I think, 1 passenger side and now 2 driver's side).  This should set me back $300 - $400 so I am bracing for that impact on the savings account.

Only one person noticed that I was not wearing glasses yesterday at church.  I went out of my way to greet people (and allow them to notice) but only the husband of the daughter's eye doctor noticed (and he thought I had gotten contacts).  Other than my cubemate at work, no one had noticed there either.  Maybe my glasses didn't change my looks at much as I thought they had.  All is going well and I am faithfully putting drops in my eyes as the instructions say to do.  I have a follow up visit on Thursday.  My left eye is dry sometimes but other than that, they feel fine.  I have to tape these plastic shields over each eye each night (for one more night) and the tape is very sticky and so my face tends to have sticky spots on it perpetually.  That is the only thing I am looking forward to stopping doing.  I did have to wear eye protection yesterday while mowing the front yard.  That is something that I have not had to do in a long, long time.

I only have 28 days until I turn 40 so I am in the home stretch.  I will give my normal update tomorrow on my weight but I almost hit the 25 lb milestone today.  More details tomorrow (when hopefully I do hit it).  Well, it is time to get the kids up as they are driving me to work today since the Buick is out of commision.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

We had a blast yesterday at a get together for some "like minded" home schooling families.  I was not really that pumped to go but we did have a great time.  The weather did not look to be in our favor in the morning but the afternoon was beautiful.  Unfortunately this limits the choice of food and the high sodium hot dog did me in and I was up 2/3 lbs this AM.  I have always heard the last 10 lbs on any diet is the hardest and I am in that last 10 lb period and struggling (only down 1 lb since last Sunday morning's weigh in).  So be it.

Last weekend the wife and I hit the Half Priced Book Store and I was able to peruse the clearance CD rack (one of my favorite things to do).  We went about a month ago as well and I have hit my favorite pawn shop for some CDs in that time frame as well.  Here is what I have picked up (all for $1 each).
  • First Trip to Half Priced Books
    • MxPx - Ten Year's And Running
    • C+C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat (the kids love the Everybody Dance Now song)
    • Jon Anderson - The More You Know
  • Pawn Shop Trip
    • Depeche Mode - Songs Of Faith And Devotion
    • The Alarm - Raw
    • The Alarm - Change
    • Enigma - The Screen Behind The Mirror
    • Stone Temple Pilots - Core
    • Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet
    • Deep Forest - Comparsa
    • Alien Youth - Alien Youth
  • Second Trip to Half Priced Books
    • Harry Connick Jr - Oh My Nola
    • Harry Connick Jr - Blue Light, Red Light
    • Matchbox Twenty - Yourself or Someone Like You
    • By The Tree - Root
    • Eli - Things I Prayed For
    • August Burns Red - Looks Fragile After All
    • Circle Of Dust - Disengage
    • Reba McEntire - Reba
The actual price of the CDs purchased at Half Priced Books is only $0.90 since the wife has a 10% teacher's discount card (home school teachers qualify).  I think I might have to make it a policy to limit my max price for a CD to $1.  I got 19 CDs for less than the price of 2 new ones and other than the MxPx and August Burns Red, each of them have had multiple listen to's since I purchased them (I especially like By The Tree).

Well we did not get home until around 9:45 last night and did not get settled and into bed until about 10:30.  This pushed some normal "night" showers into morning showers and with sleeping in a little, we are running behind this AM.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

I am continued to be amazed at how fast my eyes are healing (or working I guess) after the LASIK surgery.  I went to my 1 day follow up eye doctor appointment and was already seeing 20-25 which I guess is pretty good for the day after the surgery.  I sat in bed last night reading a book and just had to laugh when I remembered that I was not wearing my glasses.  I had even asked the doctor yesterday how long before my eyes normalized and I could decide if I needed to look into reading glasses.  I guess that question was a little premature.  I ended up finishing a movie last night.
  • The Fog: I did not have high hopes for this one and it was about what I expected.  It was not really that scary and the special effects of the 100 year old ship and crew reminded me too much of the first Pirates of the Caribbean.  The main female character I recognized from Lost (she played Shannon who died in the 2nd season I think).  The male lead I recognized from Cheaper by the Dozen.  I also recognized one of the minor characters from the short ran series Tilt.  Anyway, don't see this film.  I even broke one of my rules in that I don't ever watch a full screen (this film has been modified to fit your screen) version.  In my haste to grab and watch as many library movies before they start charging for them, I failed to notice that this was the full screen version.
We started watching the latest Indiana Jones movie last night with the kids so that it up next along with finishing A Good Year.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

Day One with no glasses.  Technically just my first full day with no glasses since after around 10 am yesterday I did not wear them either.  But this is definitely Blog One without glasses.  It is 5:20 am and I am up so I thought I would let you know my (semi) immediate thoughts about LASIK.  I was never even in the slightest bit nervous.  The is partly due to me not being a person that gets nervous and partly because I was 2 days away from having this surgery last April and I got all the lead up nervousness out of the way.  The staff was very nice and answered all my questions and other than one of the machines needing to be reset a few times before it worked (some tool that measured the thickness of my cornea) all went very smooth.  The lady that ran that machine put a hair net on me and crammed some tissues under it right in front of my ears (she said, "They use a lot of drops and this will pevent the drops from entering your ears.")  I was given some valium and benedryl to relax me and then was given a 10 minute massage on my neck and back.  I sat in a nice leather recliner for a few minutes and then was escorted into the laser room.  The freakiest part was the forcing of your eye to be open.  They do this with some little hooks that they stick under your eyelid corners.  That was a little unlpeasant but my main concern was not being able to blink if I wanted to.  It turns out that this was not a problem.  My eyes were so well lubricated that I never wanted to blink.  The procedure took about 5 minutes per eye (this is a guess as I will discuss in a minute).  Once they peel back a flap of your eye and the laser does its thing, you can actually smell your eye burning from the laser.  I mentioned this to the man that was escorting me out to my car once the whole thing was over and he admitted they avoided putting that in the brochure.  After the surgery I was examined (in another room) by the doctor and she had to clean the edge of the cut for some reason.  Then they taped some huge clear plastic shields over my eyes, put some sunglasses on over those and sent me home.  The shields had to stay on the rest of the day and all night.  They need to be on my eyes each of the next 4 or 5 nights as well.  I am not allowed to touch my face at all from my eyebrows to the bottom of my cheek.  So far this is not that hard but we do this without thinking usually so who knows how well I am doing.  I slept well on the way home and for about 4 hours after getting home.  I was up for about 2 hours then took another 90 minute nap (they recommend sleeping as much as possible and keeping your eyes closes when awake).  I took the valium they sent home with me since I was not tired and it was nearing 10 pm.  I woke up around 2 in the morning and could actually read the clock (it is about 8 feet away and I can never read it without getting closer or putting on my glasses) so this was my first cool "I can see without my glasses" moment.  I have to put antibiotic drops in my eyes for 5 days and some fake tears (over the counter stuff) for the next 6 months (4 times per day).  So far I am pleased with the whole experience.  My far sight will take some time to adjust they tell me (months) so I imagine it will take some time to really tell if it was worth it.  I am sure I will keep you posted.

I did finish a few movies recently...
  • Anastasia: With Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner how can you go wrong?  This one was released in 1956 and is based on a broadway play that was popular at the time.  Disney remade this movie in 1997 with Meg Ryan and John Cusack doing voices.  I really enjoyed this restored version though at times the background music drowned out the main character's voices (especially early in the movie).  Also, unlike some other movies from that time frame that I have watched recently, this movie was not too long (Auntie Mame was 2:20!).  The ending was kind of abrupt and you could see it coming but all in all, I would recommend it.
  • Get Smart: I am becoming a Steve Carell fan (and I have not ever seen an episode of The Office).  I have seen enough of the old TV series to catch the references but this was not just a rehashing of the old gags with new actors.  There were a few laugh out loud moments (I dont laugh out loud often so that is saying something).  Other than one scene that was 5 seconds long and in extremely poor taste, the humor was pretty clean.  I would recommend this one and would even let me 11 year old watch it (with a slight diversion when that one scene was coming up).
The wife and I are part of the way through A Good Year and I am part of the way through The Fog so those will be the next reviews I suppose.  I think it is time to make the coffee and wake up the wife.

Greetings,

With the exception of this morning, last week went pretty well.  I attribute the pound I gained today to eatiing about an hour and a half later than normal last night.  I am still about on pace to meeting my goal of 180 by the time I turn 40.  I did (for a day or two) venture into the 180's for the first time in a long time (no idea really but probably 2 years as I do recall coming home from Cordoba in Feb 2007 at 189 lbs - what I affectionately call my "Cordoba Weight")..  Next week will be a little scary for this update as I likely will not see the treadmill for a few days to avoid getting sweat in my eyes (at least that is the excuse I plan on using when the alarm does not go off at 4:45 as it does now).  We will have to wait and see.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

The week before my son went away to camp, he would point out certain "lasts" for him.  For instance, he would say, "This is my last Tuesday night with you guys before camp" or "This is the last time I will eat breakfast on a Friday morning before camp", etc.  It got quite annoying and  he was warned (multiple times) to stop driving us insane.  I am scheduled (once again) to have LASIK surgery.  My appointment was for next Wednesday afternoon but it has been moved to 9:00 AM that same day.  I have worn glasses since I was 3 years old (with the exception of a few months in my teen years when I experimented with contacts - I will save that for another blog).  But for the last 37 years or so, I have got up each morning and put on my glasses so I could see to get around.  I cannot help but mark a few personal "lasts" for me as I look forward to NOT having to wear glasses.  I keep these milestones to myself mostly (unlike my son) but I still mark them nonetheless.

I cannot imagine what that feeling will be like actually.  It has been 25 years or so since I wore contacts.  I have not owned a single pair of sunglasses in 25 years.  I walked by the sunglasses hut in the middle of the mall the other night and actually thought about stopping and looking at them (instead of passing right by with as much interest as a shop devoted to cell phones or perfume).  I got a little excited at the prospect of buying a pair of knock off designer sunglasses.  It was a strange feeling.  I don't know how quite to describe it to you.  I am sure you will hear more about my eyes soon enough in future blogs.

Recently I read an article in the local paper that explained some changes in our local library.  Among other things, our library is going to charge for borrowing DVDs (and CDs).  The cost is only $0.50 each and this is needed due to some property tax capping that is going on in our state.  I completely understand the reasons and am not particularly upset but this will definitely stop my A-Z watching of the library's catalog of DVDs.  It is just as well, there were more bad movies than good (or even mediocre).  Perhaps I should be thankful for this excuse to stop.  The changes to not take effect until August 3rd and I am at the library now (with 6 DVDs next to me ready to be checked out once I am done with this blog).  The wife and I are headed to Indianapolis today (sin niños) so I had better wrap this up.

Blog Number 367

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

I have a few minutes before bedtime to catch up on a few more movie revies and recent false starts.
  • (Old) All The King's Men - I actually forgot what this was about.  After reviewing the IMDB site I now remember that I kind of like parts of this film about a southern governor (set sometime in the mid 1900s I think).  It got horrible reviews but Sean Penn did a good job.  I don't necessarily recommend this movie, it was just OK.
  • (Old) Along Came Polly - This was one of those comedies where all the funny parts were in the previews but the wife and I toughed it out.  I don't think I have ever seen one episode of Friends so my opinion of Jennifer Aniston is based on this movie and her small role in Office Space and Bruce Almighty (and now, but not at the time I watched this move, her role in The Break-Up).  I think she does comedy well (though I still am not tempted to watch Friends even though I liked Matthew Perry in "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip").
  • (Old) Amazing Grace - Excellent film (though I am a sucker for historic films).  This one is about the man who fought to abolish slavery in England in the 1800s.  I highly recommend this one.  He is a friend of the person who wrote the hymn with the same name as this movie (hence the movie title).
  • (New) Horton Hears A Who - OK, another movie NOT in my A-Z order (and another one that I watched with the daughter whilst the son is away at camp).  Like most movies I watch, I did not read the book first.  It was about 30 minutes in before I remembered that both Jim Carey and Steve Carroll were doing the main voices (Horton the Elephant and the Mayor of Whoville).  They played the characters well but didn't add anythink unique.  Carol Burnette did a great job as the kangaroo though.  All in all a good movie and laugh out loud funny in places.
  • (New) Bad News Bears - This is the remake with Billy Bob Thorton.  I only made it about 1/2 way before giving up (specifically 57 minutes).  The characters were almost exactly the same as was the storyline (other than having a kid in an automated wheelchair and the fact that the coach is an exterminator and not a pool service man).  Once they were ready to recruit Kelly Lee to play for the team I figured I had had enough.
  • (New) An American Carol - This is rated PG-13 for "irreverent content" which is a reason I have never seen cited for this rating.  Leslie Nielson is in this one (along with a cameo by Gary Coleman).  This is like A Christmas Carol only the 3 spirits visit a documentary film maker (aka Scrooge) and make him rethink his attitudes about the 4th of July.  An interesting concept but I am a little past Airplane-like humor (ok, not really, but this was just no funny enough to move beyond minute 40 or so.
Well that is enough for now as it is bed time.

Greetings,

Time again for the weekly weight update.  Still keeping up the pace (give or take).  Today is actually my son's 11th birthday but I will not see him since he is off at camp.  I wonder how he is doing.  He has never been away from family for more than one night and here we are sending him away for 5.  I shouldn't worry I guess as he is probably having the time of his life and not even thinking about me or his mother or sister.  The wife will see him tomorrow when our church takes over cooking duties for the day.  I guess I will have to wait until then for a report.

I skipped the treadmill on Sunday (after hitting the 20 lb mark).  I had mowed the front and back yard on Saturday and was a little sore.  I have not lost any weight since then so maybe I had better not skip any more days.  Only 41 days until I hit the big Four-O.

Blog Number 365

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

Dial up access is not as awful as I had anticipated.  I mean, ya, it is incredibly slow but I figured I would be more frustrated waiting for pages to load.  So far though I (and the rest of the family) am just glad to have internet at home again at our disposal.

I think I will devote Monday's to reviewing the movies I was able to finish during the previous week.  Also I will pick some select movies from the ones I have watched since my trip through the alphabet of the library's movies as well.  (Old) denotes that it was in my original list a few blogs ago and that I am reviewing from memory.  (New) indicates something within the last 2-3 weeks (i.e. since the original blog listing the movies I have watched.
  • (Old) Across The Universe: We watched this one a few weeks ago.  It is a movie / musical based on all Beatle's songs.  I actually enjoyed this one and would recommend it if this concept sounds interesting to you.  There were cameos by Joe Cocker and Bono (U2) and though the story line was hard to follow at times (there were a lot of characters) it was worth keeping with it to the end.
  • (Old) Alien vs. Predator: I watched this one early on in my A-Z trek.  This one almost made me abandon the idea of watching all the library's movies but it did fill in the background of both the Alien and Predator movies. The action scenes were pretty cool and the story line was interesting which is more than I can say for...
  • (Old) Alien vs. Predator Requiem: Wow, first of all, this movie was dark.  I mean you could not see much of the action as you were in some building with no power (at night) or in a sewer tunnel most of the time.  I stopped about 30 minutes in and cranked up the brightness on my DVD player.  This helped with seeing what was going on but not with the plot.  Also, the ending suggested yet another AvP movie could be in the works (which is fine unless the library gets a copy).
  • (New) Auntie Mame: Another one of those that I would never have watched without my A-Z commitment.  This one took 4 days to watch (clocking in at 2 hours and 20 minutes).  It was released in the 50s sometime and follows a young boy from about age 12 to college age and his semi-crazy aunt (Mame) who he comes to live with after his father dies.  Parts of it were funny but I would not recommend it.
  • (New) Space Chimps: OK, this is not in the As, Bs or Cs but since the son is at camp this week, I decided to watch this with the daughter (after making a Kroger ice cream run).  I was hoping since it had Patrick Warburton (from Seinfeld, Rules of Engagement, etc) as one of the voices that it would be funnier.  I was wrong.  The daughter seemd to enjoy it though.
  • (New) After The Sunset: I cannot think of a movie with Pierce Brosnan that I have liked so I was a little concerned about this one.  I was pleasantly surprised.  Woody Harrelson is good as well.  Brosnon is a retired diamond thief who has ruined FBI agent Harrelson's career by failing to be captured.  Harrelson goads Brosnon out of retirement so he can redeem his career.  Naomie Harris shows up (Tia from Pirates of the Carribean) so you can't help but wait for her to act more like a pirate.
  • (New) Against The Ropes: This one was too scratched up to play on my DVD player.  Pity as I had not seen Omar Epps in very many movies (Big Trouble was one) and just finished another Meg Ryan movie (City of Angels) so I had high hopes.  There are a few movies that have been checked out a few too many times I guess and are in quite bad shape by the time I get to them.  Oh well.
  • (New) All That Heaven Allows: This one was released in 1955 and stars Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson.  Another one of those I would not have picked up or given a 2nd glance towards.  A pretty good movie overall, no overacting, the plot moved along pretty well with just the right amount of tension.  I would recommend it.
  • (New) Blood And Chocolate: I gave this one about 30 minutes before I gave up.  Modern day werewolf story about a young woman who works in a chocolate store.  I am assuming that the title reflects her 2 great loves.  The plot did not seem to be going anywhere and it was getting time for bed so we chose to abandon it.
  • (New) Break-Up, The: I was looking forward to this one and it did not dissapoint.  We watched it over (3) nights (like a lot of movies).  The wife and I paused it several times to point out how stupid men or women are and to take sides in whatever argument was going on.  Those interludes provided more laughter than the movie so if you want us to come watch it with you, let us know.
  • (New) Benchwarmers, The: I new this one would be horrible going into it but hoped that there would be enough David Spade sarcasm to get me through it.  We only lasted 14 minutes before ejecting the DVD.  Rob Schneider had the only believable character but there was just too much crude humor (and no non-crude humor) to keep us interested.  This is our new record for giving up on a movie (for those of you keeping track at home).
I will update you on this week's weight loss progress tomorrow.

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

I am actually blogging from my house.  I bought a modem and signed up for NetZero and once again have internet at home.  Mind you, the editing page for this blog took about 2 minutes to load (no telling how long the submit process will take).  I am trying to remember the last time I had dial up internet.  I think it was when we lived in an apartment in Kokomo which had to be about 7 years ago.  I remember buying a 50 ft phone cord to run it up and down walls and around furniture and doors.  My daughter had to have just been born (jeesh that is a long time ago).

I don't have anything to say really but hopefully with home access to the internet I can blog a little more.  We will see.

Blog Number 363

Greetings,

Time again for the weekly weight update.  Last Wednesday (7/1) was a big one day drop (195.7 to 194.2 - 1.5 lbs) so most of the week was spent keeping that weight from coming back.  Given that Thursday night was our monthly scheduled Date Night and that we had a 3 day weekend (with a July 4th party at our church), this was not an easy task.  But my weight this morning is 1/2 lb less than less Wednesday's so we are still making progress.  I did add another column to the spreadsheet.  It takes the average weight loss per day so far and then projects my weight on my birthday (8/24) if I keep up the current pace.  I don't think I had a specific weight in mind when I started but 180 sounds about right to me (and not just because I am hovering around that in the Pace column).  Still feeling good and thinking that I will make it to 40 in much better shape than 39 (or probably 30).

Blog Number 362

Greetings and welcome to today's random thought.

It has been a while hasn't it since my last real blog.  Almost 5 months have gone by it seems.  I have the day off and I have some things to get off of my chest so here it goes.

Last night was "date night" on the monthly calendar and I also slept in this morning and missed my 5 AM appointment with the treadmill.  As such I was a little concerned about the weighing in since restaurant food usually has instant weight gain as a result.  I will update the numbers next Tuesday in my weekly weight spreadsheet update but rest assured it wasn't too bad. I do have a 4th of July cookout to go to tomorrow so that should also kill any ideas of losing weight over the 3-day, holiday weekend (sigh).  Oh well.

Many times during the week I will be in a conversation or just observe something in life that reminds me of a scene in a movie.  I think a lot of guys work this way really (kind of like the Tony Dinozzo character on TV's NCIS).  This week my 7 year old daughter was singing the song, "This Old Man" and stopped mid song.and asked my wife, "What is a 'paddywhack' and why would an old man roll home?"  It is as if she could not sing a song that she did not know the meaning for.  She was quite shocked when the wife could not answer either part of the question.  This story reminded me of a scene near the beginning of "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" where Spock, Bones and Kirk are singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" around a campfire.  It comes time for Spock to join in and he does not (citing the reason as being that he was trying to ascertain the meaning of the lyric "Life is but a dream").  Does my daughter have a little Spock in her?  Maybe so.

When we moved into our house here in Kokomo, one of the first things we did was renew our library cards.  We all love the library and usually go there each Saturday morning.  Since we do not have cable (or even a TV) at home, we usually just check out movies and watch them on the computer.  I realized rather quickly that I was spending way too much time trying to find 3 or 4 movies to check out each week so I made and executive decision.  I decided to start in the A's and just watch every movie.  I made an exception list for movies that I would not watch...
  • I would not watch rated R movies that received that rating for certain reasons (nudity, excessive language, etc though violence / gore was OK).
  • I would not watch any movie that I had alreaday seen (even if the wife had NOT seen it) or any movie that the wife had scene (even if I had not seen it).  I have this thing about watching a movie that I have not seen with someone who has already seen it.  It is just not as fun.
  • I would not watch any movie that (although PG-13) appeared to have too much humor based on sexual references.  Nothing against that kind of humor, I just don't find it funny.
  • I would not watch any "movie" that was not released to theaters (made for TV movies)
I have been watching about 3 movies a week now for 2 months (except for when the wife and kids were in Texas, then I watched more) and am still in the B's mostly.  When looking for movies, I still start in the A's in case one was checked out when I last looked and I think I have watched a few C movies so far.  I am keeping a spreadsheet (I know, you are shocked) of the movies and whether or not I actually finished the movies (some were just too horrible) and whether or not I would recommend it to a friend or not.  So far here is my list (DNF denotes Did Not Finish)...
  • Across The Universe

  • Alien vs. Predator Requiem
  • All The King's Men
  • Along Came Polly
