Mr. Jesus and I Disagree on How to Spread the Word

I have blogged in the past of my dislike of having things put on my property without my permission.  Last October I wrote about joining the “No Throw” list.  There was a follow up blog shortly thereafter about joining the “No Hang” list.  As a quick update (and I know you are dying to know) there has not been anything thrown or hung onto my property since that time.  That all changed though with Mr. Jesus when I found this on my driveway.

MrJesus1

There is no shortage of businesses down here in Texas that offer landscaping services.  Several of my neighbors use them.  A truck pulls up pulling lots of lawn equipment. A few guys jump out of the truck and in a very short amount of time the lawn looks great.  My Indiana brain cannot wrap itself around why someone would pay good money for this service when the lawns are so small down here.  I recently mowed and weed whacked our lawn for the first time since we moved here (6+ months ago) and it took me no time at all.  Anyway, that is not the point of this blog.

I found the pictured advertisement rolled up with a plastic clothes pin holding it together.  It was tossed onto my driveway.  The flyer explains the 3 levels of service that Valley Lawnscape offers along with their prices.  Just above the phone number there is a sentence encouraging me to “Call Mr. Jesus”.  Other places on the flyer I am encouraged to “replase” my current lawn care service (“replase” appears misspelled 3 times on the flyer).  At the very top rof the page there is another sentence that says something to the effect that I should not throw away this note as I might need their service eventually.  At the very top right the text “John 3, 16” appears.

I could not help but chuckle at that.  I mean, come on!  Mr. Jesus and a John 3:16 reference?  Jeesh!  Anyway, I was considering how to voice my displeasure of their method of advertising.  There was no website or email address anywhere, only a phone number.  Given the corny biblical reference and the lack of grammar skills I thought it would not be productive to call them.  I found it ironic that their service is to make my property look BETTER when in fact they were littering on my property to do so.  The clothes pin had metal in it and if I had not seen it before pulling out of the garage I suppose it is feasible that tire damage could occur.  I was still thinking about how I could seek my revenge on Mr. Jesus early the next morning when walking Nina.  And then it hit me…

MrJesus2

Here are all the Mr. Jesus flyers that I could find.  Most driveways that I passed still had these clothes pinned adverts in them.  Several appeared to have been run over as the clothes pins were broken.  I am not sure if this is stealing legally.  I suppose that I am taking something off of someone else’s property.  I do not think Mr. Jesus could sue me though.  It really irks me that anyone could think that they can just throw things on my property (or in some cases hang them on my door).  I did find a website devoted to this problem but it appears to be for New York.  I will have to continue to be a vigilante for this perceived injustice.

I would like to say a big “You’re Welcome” to all my neighbors.  And to Mr. Jesus I would like to say “Thank You” for the clothes pins.  I put your flyers in the recycle bin.

The Listening Project–Week 35

Well another week has passed by and I was able to get through a few more CDs in my listening project.  I made great progress this week and listened to 55 CDs.  You can reference this blog entry for details about this project.  Here are the CDs I knocked off of my list this week.

Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

  • Russ Taff “The Way Home”: This is probably my favorite Russ Taff CD.  It contains the songs “I Cry” and “Farther On” (both of which I have sang as specials in church).
  • Rachel Rachel “Way To My Heart”: I think I picked this one up as I had heard that Kerry Livgren played the guitar solo on Rachel Rachel’s cover of “Carry On My Wayward Son”.
  • Various Artists “Wayne's World”: Hits and misses here for me.  The kids like Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” but I like Alice Cooper’s “Feed My Frankenstein”.
  • Russ Taff “We Will Stand-Yesterday and Today”: I am not sure why I bought this since I have most of Russ’s stuff already.  I did get to hear “I Cry” and Father On” again quickly though.
  • Charlie Peacock” West Coast Diaries Volume 1, 2 & 3”: Originally released independently (my cassette copies came via mail order), these were rereleased by Sparrow records after Charlie signed with them.  I gave away my cassette copies to a pastor friend of mine some time ago.  Volume 1 contains my favorite, Charlie Peacock song, “My Mind Played A Trick On Me”.
  • English Band “What You Need”: Joe English at one time was the drummer for Wings.  He is an awesome vocalist as well (sounding much like Phil Keaggy).
  • Harry Connick Jr “When My Heart Finds Christmas”: I am still finding Christmas CDs peppered throughout this project.  This is his first of 3 Christmas albums (so far).
  • Kerry Livgren “When Things Get Electric”: This is post Kansas and post A.D. Kerry Livgren.  The vocalists on this one sound very much like the vocalists on the A.D. albums (but they are not the same singers).  This is a great CD (especially if you like / liked Kansas).
  • Twila Paris “Where I Stand”: I am not a big Twila Paris fan but I really like this CD.
  • Whitecross “Whitecross”: I saw Whitecross in concert in support this, their first, album.  They were touring with fellow Christian metal band Bloodgood.  The drum set was so puny (like maybe 6 pieces) and the lead singer had no stage presence but Bloodgood more than made up for it.  Scott Wenzel’s voice sounds very much like Ratt and the guitarist is awesome.  A great CD despite having a low budget.
  • John Elephante “Windows Of Heaven”: John’s vocals are awesome.  He was lead singer for Kansas at one time.  He also did a stint as lead vocalist of Mastodon, a Christian metal band.
  • Amy Morris “Within the Sound of Your Voice”: I have no recollection of buying this CD.  That is a rarity in this project as I usually have a great memory for the purchases of my music.
  • Chevelle “Wonder What's Next”: The 1,000th CD.  Wow!
  • The Waiting “Wonderfully Made”: I have this memory of listening to this CD while driving our minivan on a snowy night while helping a friend pick up a desk he was buying.  This was their last release as a band.

I am 98.1% of the way done now.  Next week should be the last week of this project for sure since I only have 19 CDs remaining in my list.  I am already worrying about how to decide what to listen to after I get done with U2’s Zoorpoa.

Outsourcing My Body–Week 12

Well, It has been twelve weeks since I outsourced my body.  On to this week’s summary…

Diet

I think I have moved past the end of this project already.  This applies to Diet, Exercise and Weight actually.  The wife is not really telling me what to eat or what not to eat.  We celebrated our 15th anniversary this week and went out to eat on Friday night.  We also got a pizza from Costco last night.  It feels like I am in the maintenance part already.

Exercise

I continue to walk a dog each morning (time permitting) and ride my bike some afternoons / evenings.  It seems like not much more than I was doing before this whole thing started really.

Weight

I gained 2/3 lbs. this week.  This still puts me down 25 lbs. overall and that is great.  I am at the high end of my confortable weight range so I am not sweating it.  I would like to be down another 15 lbs. or so but I will probably not put that loss into any formal timeline.

Other

As I mentioned in the Diet section, I feel I have moved on past the hard part.  I am glad for the process and thankful to the wife for her part in this process.  She has no big plans for me (that I know of) for this last week of our agreement.  These last few blogs (and weeks) have been anticlimactic for sure.

Random Photos–2012-03-24

Greetings,

It is time once again to clear out the memory card on my cell phone of those photos that I took for some reason or another.  Won’t you join me as I try to remember why I took these photos?

0303121236

So we are staying in the house we are currently in for another year.  We had planned to stay here only for 5 months and the move back into the house we lived in when we previously lived in McKinney.  However, the couple that lives is (what we affectionately still call) our house decided to renew their lease.  We talked our landlords (a nice couple originally from Vietnam) into resodding the back yard as a condition of our renewal (we also got $400 toward a new dishwasher as well).  Here is a photo of the sod that was delivered to our house.

0304121135

I snapped this on the way to our car as we were leaving church a few weeks back.  It is perfect!

0304121608

I think I have mentioned that a fried of ours down here sells (among other things) silk flowers.  His company has a ginormous showroom in Dallas and every once in a while they have a sale of their closeout items.  We were invited one Sunday to look at everything before the sale officially started on Monday.  This is part of the wife’s haul.

0307121826

Just a random sunset.  I think this pictures shows the true limitations of the cell phone camera since I remember this sunset as being much prettier than this pictures shows.

0317121857

Sad really, partly because this product will probably sell (you can shove the dog’s pill in a hunk of cheese you know) and partly because I didn’t think of this first.

0319121415

When I logged into work last Monday morning I noticed that all my meetings were cancelled for the day.  I pinged my manager for permission to take the afternoon off and the wife and kids and I drove to the mall in Frisco and ice skated.  I had not ice skated in 30 or so years so my first 2 times around the rink were with the help of the side railings.  After that though I kind of got the hang of it.  We all had a great time.

Thanks for taking time to look at my random photos.

Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

  • Jimmy Buffet “Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays”: This is a live CD and one I very much enjoyed.  This marks the first time I actually listened to this CD even though I bought it some time ago.
  • Leslie Phillips “The Turning”: This is the last CD by this artist under the name Leslie.  On all her newer stuff she goes by Sam Phillips.  Whatever the name, I love her voices.
  • Various Artists “Twister Soundtrack”: This is my son’s favorite movie (he is really into weather) but for the life of me I did not recognize any of these songs nor to I recall hearing them during the movie.  The next time we watch it I will have to pay less attention to the tornados and more attention to the background music.
  • Various Artists “Two A.D.”: The follow up to “One A.D.” that I reviewed a while back.  New Age / Trance style music that is best listened to as background music.
  • UB40 “UB40”: Fun fact: the band takes its name from the form you fill out for unemployment in their native country.  This is pre “Red, Red Wine” but is still fun to listen to.
  • The Waiting “Unfazed” & “The Waiting”: I love this band’s lyrics.  Highlights (lyric-wise) include “The Company You Keep” and “Hands In The Air”.  I am making a mental note to blog about the latter song as it really describes my life to a tee.
  • U2 “The Unforgettable Fire”: The opening song last Sunday at church was “Pride (In The Name Of Love).  I do not know how it fit’s in really to the service but I do recall the band playing it around this time last year.
  • Eric Clapton / Rod Stewart “Unplugged” & “Unplugged…And Seated”: These are both from the time when everybody and their brother was doing acoustic, live CDs.  Both are very good though I think I prefer the Clapton one better.
  • Shania Twain “Up!”: This release came with 2 discs.  One was supposed to be more country and one more rock.  I think they replaced the fiddle with another guitar as they sound about the same.  The international version has the country version and an international version.  I have heard it and they basically replaced the fiddle with some sort of weird Japanese stringed instrument.
  • Cher “The Very Best Of Cher”: I was listening to “I Got You Babe” and thinking of my wife on the eve of our 15th wedding anniversary while in the parking lot of Kroger during a run to the grocery store for garlic bread.
  • 4 Him “Walk On”: I wasn’t going to say anything but I have been on a phenomenal run of YESes.  My previous record for CDs in a row that I would listen to again was somewhere in the 60’s/  This CD ended a streak of 130 CDs in a row that I would listen to again.  I do not have enough CDs left in this project to beat that record.  I have seven 4 Him CDs and all but one garnered a NO.
  • Boston “Walk On”: Wow, I am glad I gave this CD a listen to as it might just become one of my favorites.
  • The Call “The Walls Came Down”: This is sort of a best of from their first 3 albums.  When they changed labels and got a bigger following, their old label released this CD that contains about 2/3s of the songs from the fist 3 releases by this awesome band.  I have their 2nd album on LP somewhere in my closet.
  • US “War (Remastered) Disc 1 & 2”: I am allowing myself to not listen to my regular War CD as it is the same track listing as disc 1 of this remastered version.  The bonus disc has 4 versions of New Year’s Day and 3 versions of Two Hearts Beat As One.  They are played back to back so this is not really a pleasant listen.

I am 92.8% done and I managed not to buy any more CDs this week.  I have 74 CDs to go according to my master spreadsheet.  Based on recent weeks, I should be done in 2 weeks but I have a workshop during the first week of April which likely means I will not be listening to music at work for 3 of the days that week.  Since the majority of my listening time is at work, This project might go until week 37.

Quince Años

Fifteen years ago today I got married to the only girl that I have ever kissed.  I could (or probably should) devote this blog to my wife, her love for me, blah, blah, blah, but I think I will instead talk about coffee mugs.

0321120545

I will give you two guesses (and the first one doesn’t count) as to which mug is mine and which is the wife’s.

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  We are the same (a coffee mug) but we are obviously unique.  We go together (and even look like we belong together).

My mug (in case you could not guess) is the one with the football on it and my wife’s mug is the prettier, more formal looking one.

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  I am the simpler, informal one whereas she is more ornate and detailed.  I am more base in my interests and she is more complex and it shows in our exteriors.

These mugs (moments before this picture was taken) came from the top shelf of our dishwasher.  They were placed there yesterday (after coffee consumption was done for the day) and sat (mostly in the dark) until the washer was ran.  Then they sat (still in the dark) while they dried and awaited the time for their use.  This is done every day of the week, ad nausea.

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  We spend most of all our time together.  There are times that we are in the dark, and maybe cannot even see each other, but we know we are together (or have faith enough that we are).  We see each other at our dirtiest and our cleanest.  Also (and you can ask our kids this), we shower together at times (the son will even go so far as to suggest that we do this to save time if he happens to be in a hurry).  Additionally, we are OK with doing the same things, day after day, over and over.  We know our place.

What you cannot see in the above picture is that the mugs have both sugar (turbinado) and creamer (half and half) in them in anticipation of coffee being prepared.  I like (need) more sugar and she likes more creamer.

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  Though you cannot see it, and though we look differently on the outside, we are very similar inside.  Also, I require more sugar (I am more bitter naturally) and she less (she is sweeter).  She requires more creamer (I am smoother naturally or perhaps am more ok with things being less smooth / more bumpy).  We both are ready for whatever comes next in life and we will go through it together.

We have had many different mugs over the years.  Some have been retired, some have been broken or chipped, some have simply been replaced when a new mug appears (like in the case of my football mug that was a Father’s Day gift from my kids or her current mug that was a gift from a secret pal at our church back in Kokomo).

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  We are not the same as when we first met or were first married.  We have changed.  Some changes happen over time and some were sudden due to the things that life throws at us (our handles broke off).  Some changes are of our own doing and others are suggested to us by friends and family.  Over time, we may look totally different but we still recognize each other.

If you look at the photo again, you will see some items in the background.  There is a non functioning light bulb (to the left of the top of her mug).  There are some bananas (in a plastic bag, to the left of the light bulb).  Also there is a roll of paper towels.  To the right is a microwave.  The non functioning light bulb is actually sitting in a plastic bowl that is full of marbles (don’t ask).

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  We are surrounded by lots of things.  Some junk that needs to be thrown out but we are hanging onto for no reason (like the light bulb), some that are for our good (like the bananas, probably organic), some to help us get along in life (like the microwave), and some that are there in anticipation of our mistakes (like the paper towels).  There are even things that make no sense (like the marbles).  If we zoomed out on the photo, the mugs would almost be swallowed up by all the things around them.  In the big picture, we are like these coffee mugs, almost lost in the chaos that is our lives but yet close to each other.

The wife and I have coffee every morning, without fail.  Usually it is my job to get up (while the wife stays in bed and Oreo, the Shih-Poo, takes over my spot in the bed) and get the water going.  Oftentimes it is the wife who preps the cups, pours the coffee and delivers it to me in the living room.  We sit together and sip our coffee (initially it is too hot) before the kids get up and we either watch a recorded sit com or listen to a podcast (we are avid listeners to NPR’s Planet Money podcast).

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  I tend to do things first (like get up first) but she is there to help shortly and is willing to forego comfort (the bed) and the love of other things (Oreo protests though when she gets up).  In the end she does more work (like prepping the mugs, pouring and delivering the coffee) than I do.  We enjoy being together to start our day and even get angry with the kids if they come out of their rooms too early and interrupt our time together.  We enjoy laughing together (the sit com) and learning together (the podcast).  We are content to wait together (like when our coffee is too hot).

My wife was not a coffee drinker when we got married.  I introduced her to this pleasure quickly though.  Initially we had a simple coffee maker and used pre-ground beans.  We graduated to whole beans and a coffee grinder and then eventually to a French Press.  We tried an AeroPress but then moved back to the French Press.   We have each given coffee up several times in the past (sometimes together, sometimes separately) but we always come back to it.  We tried decaf coffee, tea, etc. but in the end we return to the comfort and familiarity of our morning routine.  It is usually not the coffee that we miss, but the time together each morning.  We are very jealous of this time.

I suppose this is sort of an analogy for our marriage.  I introduce my wife into new things (and she I).  Over time our tastes have become refined (grinding our own beans) and we have become more sophisticated (French Press).  Sometimes we get to snooty (AeroPress) and then quickly get back into our place.  There are periods in our lives that we change (sometimes together, sometimes solo).  In the long run though we come back together to our comfort zone.  Even though we can do our own thing (the coffee mugs can hold tea just as well as coffee), we come back to needing to prioritize our time together, irrelevant of what it is we are doing or if we are accomplishing anything.

Well I hope that you have enjoyed my blog about coffee mugs.  A special apology to the wife for not dedicating this to you and our 15th wedding anniversary.  Maybe next year.

Outsourcing My Body–Week 11

Well, It has been eleven weeks since I outsourced my body.  On to this week’s summary…

Diet

We went out on Thursday night to Pei Wei (one of our favorite places).  The wife decided that we needed lettuce wraps and then we did our normal order which consists of Pad Thai and then either Orange or Kung Pow Chicken.  All this we split among the four of us so we are really all eating 1/2 servings of everything on average.  We also ate out last night.  The daughter was at a sleepover so the wife and I split some southwestern egg rolls and fajitas.  I feared the worst when I hit the scales this morning since I tend to retain water when eating out as opposed to home.  Other than that I stuck to the normal routine of oatmeal for breakfast and avoiding anything sweet (soda or desert).  I am still keeping in mind what kind of diet I can maintain long term, a lifestyle that I can sustain.

Exercise

I think we have given up on the workout videos and are OK with my walking the dogs and riding my bike as the weather allows.  I enjoy my morning walks with Nina (our Doberman).  I grab my headphones and enjoy the good weather that we are having.  The wife talks about adding weights and some aerobics but thus far it has not happened.  With only 2 weeks to go, I am keeping quiet.

Weight

Given my gain last week I needed a nice loss this week to keep the momentum going.  Well, I got it.  I was down 3 1/3 lbs. this week.  This is my single biggest loss of any week since week 1.  This brings my total weight lost to 25 2/3 lbs.  My jeans are fitting better and better each week.  The wife notices my loss every time she gives me a hug.  I still have 13 lbs. to go to my the same goal weight that I had a few summers ago.

Other

My hair is in need of some shearing.  If the wife does not make a move in the last two weeks of this project I might defer to my normal summer method of putting on the 1/4” attachment on my razor and having at it.  As much as I think I might want to have long hair again, I don’t think the joy I would gain from it outweighs the pain of taking time each morning to tame it.  Maybe I will do that before my last weigh in of this project (every little bit helps).

Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

  • Jeff Deyo “Surrender”: I think Jeff left SONICFLOOd (I am too lazy to research at this moment) and went solo.  This sounds about like SONICFLOOd though.
  • Stephen Crumbacher “Take It In”: Solo project from the lead singer of the group Crumbacher.  I love his voice and this one is a little tamer than the CDs by his group.
  • Newsboys “Take Me to Your Leader”: This is the release that made me a Newsboys fan.  Having Steve Taylor write the lyrics was a brilliant idea.
  • Pearl Jam “Ten”: Wow, awesome.
  • MxPx “Ten Year's And Running”: I almost gave this one a NO.  I first ran across them on the Petra tribute album and this is a best of release.
  • Vangelis “Themes”: The last track on this CD is “Chariots of Fire”.
  • Eli “Things I Prayed For”: The title track’s 3 verses (about the things he prays for) goes from childhood to adolescence to adulthood.  He prays that his hair would not stick up in weird places then prays that his hair WOULD stick up in weird places then prays that his hair would not FALL OUT in strange places.
  • Petra “This Means War!”: This really solidified that all would be well with Petra when John Schlitt replaced Greg Volz as lead singer for this legendary Christian rock group.
  • Barry Manilow “This One's For You”: Don’t judge me.
  • Chevelle “This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)”: I need more Chevelle.
  • Blindside “A Thought Crushed My Mind”: A re-release of their early stuff that I picked up for $5 on sale from their website.  A little rough for my taste but still good.
  • Glenn Kaiser “Throw Down Your Crowns” & “Time Will Tell”: This lead singer from Rez / Rez Band / Resurrection Band takes on the blues.  I love his gravelly voice.
  • Giant “Time To Burn”: Not a commercial success like their self titled CD (that I wish I could find) but still awesome arena rock guitar licks and power vocals.
  • Whitecross “TO THE LIMIT - To the Limit - The Best of Whitecross”: Yet another best of from a band that I have all their releases and yet was “forced” into buying since there was a new song on it.
  • Bonnie Tyler “Total Eclipse Of The Heart”: A best of CD (I think but since I only remember 2 of her hits I am just guessing).
  • The Elms “Truth, Soul, Rock & Roll”: I need to buy more Elms stuff.
  • Chumbawamba “Tubthumper”; Very addicting.

I am 88.9% done and I managed not to buy any more CDs this week.  I have 114 CDs to go according to my master spreadsheet.

Outsourcing My Body–Week 10

Well, It has been ten weeks since I outsourced my body.  On to this week’s summary…

Diet

It was an OK week for me.  The wife fed me well and I probably had too many meals that involved bread.  I did not eat out at all save for breakfast 1 morning at work and pizza / pasta out with friends last Sunday night.  I have still held true to no deserts or no soda.  I still have in my mind that I need to build a sustainable lifestyle and no deserts is probably not a lifestyle that will work.  I could probably go the rest of my life without soda though as I have not craved it at all this year.

Exercise

I have still only been walking my beloved Doberman 1.5 miles each morning (or 1/2 that on the one morning it was very windy).  I have not even thought about going back to the exercise video and the wife has not mentioned it.  I think she is happy with my progress from the first 6 weeks or so and is happy to let me slack off for the rest of this project.  That all could change I suppose if she reads this.

Weight

I gained 1 1/6 lbs. this week.  Part of it is the amount of bread based meals that I ate and part is a theory of mine that I have stuck to in diets past.  The basis of this theory is input vs. output.  I am trying to be delicate here but my “output” this week was rather small compared to past weeks (especially past good weeks).  So, due to this, I am not too concerned with the pound I gained this week.  I am still down. 22 1/3 lbs. since this thing began.

Other

I have only 3 weeks to go and the wife is has mentioned that she is going to purchase a detox / cleansing kit for me.  I have used these before and they contain extra amounts of fiber (among other things).  So I have that to look forward to before my contract is up with the wife.

Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

  • Peter Gabriel “So”: A great way to start off the week.
  • Bryan Adams “So Far So Good”: I may be mistaken but I think I “borrowed” this CD about 5 years ago and just never returned it.  If I remembered who I borrowed it from then I would return it.  If it is yours then let me know.
  • Dave Matthews “Some Devil”: I am becoming more and more of a Dave Matthews fan every week.
  • Rich Mullins “Songs”: A best of (and my first) CD from Rich.  I have since gathered many of his regular releases.
  • Tears for Fears “Songs From The Big Chair”: Only 8 songs on this CD, pity.
  • Depeche Mode “Songs Of Faith And Devotion”: I discovered this band too late in their career.
  • SONICFLOOd “SONICFLOOd"” & “Sonicpraise”: It had to happen eventually.  This is 2 CDs that are from the artist that appear alphabetically.  Oh there have been others but normally it is a 2 CD set or something like that.  I am less of a fan now than I was originally when I bought these CDs.
  • Kathy Troccoli “Sounds Of Heaven”: Was excited and shocked to hear one of Kathy’s songs on American Idol last week (Go Light Your World).
  • White Heart “Souvenirs”: So many White Heart best of CDs in my collection.  Still good stuff though.
  • Sarah Jahn “Sparkle”: Sadly, this is the only CD that she ever put out.  I first heard her voice on the Petra tribute album.
  • Dogs of Peace “(Speak)”: This is the other CD that I mentioned last week that starts with a parenthesis and yet fell into the pile this week.  This is basically 2 guys that have played on or produced tons of other CDs coming together to do their own.  Sadly, this is their only release.
  • Various Artists “Special Brew”: This starts out with an 8 minute remix of U2’s “Numb” and just gets cooler from there.
  • Harry Connick Jr “Star Turtle”: The music is good but there are 4 tracks mixed in that (I think) are telling a story where Harry is talking to a guy with some kind of computer altered voice.  I don’t get what he is trying to do here.
  • Jet Circus “Step On It”: I bought this since the lead singer from Leviticus (well the lead singer from their 3rd release) was the lead singer on this CD.  Basically a drum machine and these guys playing bass and guitar.  So so music but good vocals.
  • KLANK “Still Suffering”: The best industrial genre CD that I own.  The wife really dislikes this CD (she says he sounds to angry to be on a Christian label) but I love it.
  • Charlie Peacock “strangelanguage”: My favorite CD by Charlie.  Just the right mix of all his other CD’s styles.  The lyrics to “Insult Like The Truth” are spot on.
  • Various Artists “Streams”: I saw this on eBay when it first came out.  Jon Anderson (from Yes) sings a duet with the group 4 Him.  This was much touted on eBay and for some reason (even though this was available at any Christian bookstore) it kept selling for >$20.  Eventually everyone caught on.  Basically an album of songs written by Brent Bourgeois (formerly of Bourgeois Tagg).  Michael McDonald, Sixpence, Delirious and others all have standout songs.
  • Various Artists “Strong Hand of Love- A Tribute to Mark Heard”: This was how I first hear Mark’s music (except his release under the name “Ideloa”).
  • Tree 63 “Sunday!”: Their last release before breaking up as a band.  I miss them.
  • dc Talk “Supernatural”: Their last release before breaking up as a band.  I miss them.

I am 83.7% done and I managed not to buy any more CDs this week.  I have 167 CDs to go according to my master spreadsheet.

Outsourcing My Body–Week 9

Well, It has been nine weeks since I outsourced my body.  On to this week’s summary…

Diet

I went out to eat a few times this week and we ordered pizza when the daughter had a friend sleep over on Friday night.  Tuesday night, two co-workers and I went out to a BBQ place and I tried to keep it as healthy as possible given the choices on the menu.  I ended up having a turkey sandwich, beans and corn…

0228121838

It was very good and I ate it all and was not overly full at the end of it all.

Saturday morning the girls (remember the daughter had a friend over) wanted donuts.  I knew that donuts would not be what I was allowed to I took the son out to breakfast.  We ended up at the Café Brazil down the road.  My breakfast (though costly) was awesome…

0303120924

The scrambled eggs were nothing to write home about but everything else was awesome.  I brought home enough as leftovers for the wife to have a 2nd breakfast before she headed out to her part time job as a rep for a gourmet dog food.

Since I did all this eating out, I was not looking forward to the scales this morning for this week’s weight reading.

Exercise

I did not test me right knee out this week but continued with my walking the dog / riding a bike routine (other than Tuesday morning when I had a 6:30 AM meeting with a co-worker in Slovakia).  I feel like I am letting the wife down in that I think she had big plans for me as we enter the 3rd month of this project.  Sorry dear.

Weight

This part of this project is going a little too well.  Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that I am making progress but other than the hiccup 2 weeks ago where I gained 1/2 lb., I have made steady progress even if my exercise or diet is not what I would like it to be.  The only thing that I have been consistent with is no sweets.  Not one cookie or soda has touched my lips since January 1.  This has been the key to all my previous diets as well so I do not know why this shocks me so much.

I got on the scales and discovered that I had my best week since week 1.  I am down another 3 1/6 lbs. this week brining my overall total to 23 1/2 lbs.

Other

I have only 4 weeks to go and I have my momentum back from a few weeks ago.  I have been thinking about what kind of sustainable lifestyle I can ease into once this is over.  One that will allow me to keep on the straight and narrow and not back to the life that led to the need for this whole project.  No sweets / soda might just be it.  It seems I can indulge on non dessert food (or soda).  As I head toward my mid 40’s I know I need to do something.  I can’t keep up this cycle every few years as eventually it will not be this easy to drop the weight I fear.  Plus there is that challenge from my mother to keep this weight off for 18 months.  That might be all the short term motivation that I need.

Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

  • Charlie Peacock.”The Secret of Time”: After a few years without a record deal, Charlie released this CD.  I had bought his independently released “West Coast Diaries” trilogy (of course) so I had my Peacock fix to get me by.  Those CDs (which another label re-released {and I bought on CD]) will be later in this project.  The daughter and I performed an acoustic version of “Dear Friend” in church one Sunday morning with the help of an awesome guitarist.
  • Nicki French “Secrets”: I got this solely for her version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and that is the lone highlight.
  • Out Of The Grey “(See Inside)”: One of 2 CDs that I own that start with a parenthesis (the other one should be on next week’s list).  I am not sure why Windows Media Player ignores this character and sorts by “See” whereas other characters like [ are not ignored.  No matter, I eventually got to this one.  I like everything by this husband / wife duo group.
  • Send The Beggar “Send The Beggar”: The lead vocalist’s voice is just strange enough to make me like this CD.  Very similar in that sense to the group According to John.
  • Thousand Foot Krutch “Set If Off”: Sometimes when you really like a group and you discover them a few CDs into their career, you should NOT go back and find their earlier stuff.  I think I would like this more if I heard it before all their other (awesome) releases.  Still good though.
  • Yngwie Malmsteen “The Seventh Sign”: I had only just heard of this artist before I found this on the $1 rack.  Awesome guitar.
  • Choir “Shades Of Gray”: Technically this is an EP and technically I only have it as 5 bonus tracks off the CD re-release of the Choir’s “Chase The Kangaroo” album.  I split it off in my music collection so it appears separately here as well.  This is an good bridge between their 1st release (as “The Choir”) and the rest of their releases.
  • Gary Chapman “Shelter”: Gary is better known as Amy Grant’s ex-husband.  This CD (which has a nice duet with Amy) is pretty good.  Sorta country, sorta not, but good overall.
  • Bond “Shine”: These 4 ladies are supposed to be good at the violin but this CD is so overproduced with drums and dance beats that their talent is kind of hidden.
  • Main Line Riders “Shot In The Dark”: A 90% off find at Mardel’s that I should have left on the rack.  Mediocre vocals with mediocre music.
  • Blindeside “Silence”: Simply awesome.  I saw them on tour in support of this release.  Just enough singing / screaming mix.  I just bought their new CD as a mp3 download.
  • Mike Stand “Simple Expression”: Former Altar Boys lead singer showing a more acoustic rock side.
  • Bobby McFerrin “Simple Pleasures”: Don’t judge me (and don’t worry, be happy).
  • Sheila Walsh “Simple Truth”: This is my only CD by this artist but I have 5 LPs.  They are all better than this one.
  • Frank Sinatra “Sinatra 80th - All The Best Disc 1 and Disc 2”: Can’t believe that I got this for $1.  Tons of great songs from the 50’s.
  • Depeche Mode “The The Singles 86-98 Disc 1 & Disc 2”: I discovered this band way too late, like when I wanted to know the original artist when Johnny Cash covered “Personal Jesus” in 2002.
  • Sixpence None The Richer “Sixpence None The Richer”: This is the one that put this band on the map with their hit “Kiss Me”.
  • Sixteen Cities “Sixteen Cities”: These guys sound very similar to The Afters.  I was looking up information about them and found out that they are leading the worship service in a nearby church the next 2 Sundays.
  • The Insyderz “Skalleluia!”: 794 CDs into this project and this is the worst CD that I have listened to yet.  Ironically this is their best selling CD.  I am not much of a ska genre fan anyway but these ska versions of classic praise and worship songs are unforgivable.
  • Randy Stonehill “The Sky Is Falling”: I have had this on LP for 25 years but still bought this re-release (with bonus tracks) anyway.  I remember talking to someone who was a Stonehill fan in the 70s that was very disappointed in this release seeing as how it was 4 years after his great first LP.
  • Bride “Snakes In The Playground”: This band is still trying (25 years later) to release another CD as good as this one.  Their website touts many of their later releases as “Snakes In The Playground 2” but it hasn’t happened yet.
  • Hokus Pick “Snappy”: Finishing this CD up as I finish this blog.

I am 78.6% done and I managed not to buy any more CDs this week.  I have 219 CDs to go according to my master spreadsheet.
