The Listening Project–Week 24

Well another week has passed by and I was able to get through a few more CDs in my listening project.  I really made progress this week and was able to get through 36 CDs and managed to move comfortably ahead of the pace for my 20 per week goal despite purchasing (15) CDs on Saturday afternoon at the local Half Priced Books store.  You can reference this blog entry for details about this project.  Here are the CDs I knocked off of my list this week.

Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

  • R.E.M “Automatic For The People” & “Green” ^ “Life's Rich Pageant”: All of these CDs were finds from my Saturday trip.  Until that day, surprisingly, I only had one R.E.M. CD in my collection.  I know that I used to own “Green” on cassette in the past.  It seems to me that I used to own the “Automatic” one as well.  This is the first I had heard the “Life’s Rich Pageant” though.
  • John Cougar Mellencamp “Dance Naked”: I also bought three CDs by this artist bringing my total for 5 (some as John Mellencamp).  All good stuff.
  • Damn Yankees “Don’t Tread”: I did not realize that this group released more than one CD.  It has a few minor hits but is still a good listen if you like this genre.
  • D-Boy “The Lyrical Strength of One Street Poet”: I gave this mostly forgettable rap CD a YES solely for the song “Shout” which samples the song of the same name by the Isley Brothers.
  • Mad At The World “Mad At The World”: I have this on LP and did not realize until I found the CD release of this album that there were really 2 more songs.  Finding this CD in the bargain rack 10 years ago was pretty cool in that I got to hear those new (to me) songs.
  • Kurt Van Sickle “Make Me An Instrument” This CD contains a single, 60 minute long track of praise and worship music.  It about brought this whole project to s screeching halt.
  • Sam Phillips “Martinis & Bikinis”: I was very excited when I found this CD.  This artist released a few albums on Christian record labels as Leslie Phillips.  Later she crossed over to a secular label and started going by the name Sam.  I love her voice no matter the label.
  • Enigma “MCMXC A.D”: I remember when I first heard “Sadeness” off of this release.  I was working at a bowling alley as a mechanic and was walking by the bar when I saw the video for that song.  The mix of dance beats and Gregorian chant was amazing.
  • Russ Taff “Medals” Probably my favorite Russ Taff album.
  • Merchant Band “Merchant Band”: My son first heard this band on a compilation CD of live worship bands from IHOP (International House of Prayer).  He liked it so much we found it on CD and bought it for him as a gift.  There are some hits and misses here but overall a good release.
  • Altar Boys “Mercy Thoughts”: There was a record label called M8 that bought the rights to many out of print Christian releases and rereleased them.  They also worked with those artists to create new releases of never released material.  This is one of those releases.  Nothing is very high quality but I enjoy listening to it for nostalgia’s sake as Altar Boys were a band I enjoyed in my youth.
  • Hanson “Middle Of Nowhere”: I bought this for the kiddos.  It is decent enough to pull out and listen to occasionally.
  • Jack Jezzro & Sam Levine “Midnight Moon”: Very new age sounding and a good find when I took a chance on this duo that I had never heard of before.  I think I went solely by the album artwork and my gut.
  • Various Artists “Mindy's Revenge”: I have seen this 20 track album in tons of bargain bins and never bought it.  I only have this as it was given to me for free when I bought another CD.  No memorable tracks really other than a song by Chris Tomlin that I already have on a CD that I own by him.
  • Keith Green “Ministry Years Volume 1 Disc 1 & 2”: I used to own this and the 2nd dual CD release (volume 2) but gave them to my mother.  I found Volume 1 on a bargain rack and am hopeful to find the other volume.  Keith is an excellent piano player as well as songwriter.  He was killed all too early in his life in a plane crash in the 80’s.  I listened to disc 2 while writing this blog entry.

Despite adding 15 CDs to the pile (my total is now 964), I am now 52.5% of the way complete.

Jon
