Outsourcing My Body–Week 4

Well, It has been four weeks since I outsourced my body.  I am getting into a rhythm / routine and now cannot remember my former life of unlimited coffee, sweets, snacks and frozen coke / ice cream runs (the kids miss these more than I do).  On to this week’s summary…

Diet

Not much changed in my diet from previous weeks.  Next week might be a bit of a challenge as I am in an all week workshop at work.  There will be more temptation to eat things I am not allowed and to eat out or in the cafeteria out of convenience.  This week though was more of the same.  It is easier to get my gallon of water in during the day as I find myself thirsty for water when I am behind.  Here is a chart comparing December’s water intake (a typical month for me as far as water consumption would go) and January (projected numbers since the month is not over yet).

Exercise

I continued to do the 30 Day Shred video that I started in week two.  I missed Thursday morning due to my shutting off the alarm and sleeping an extra hour.  The wife still allowed me to take today (Sunday) off since she felt I was doing a great job overall.  I can almost make it though the video now without taking a break.  The push ups are getting easier (though I can only do 15 before collapsing) and the only exercise that I cannot do well involves balance more than strength (though the weakness of my stabilizing muscles are probably to blame here).  I still mute the video and play my own music which makes it more enjoyable.

Other

I was talking about my progress this morning with the wife and she indicated that since she only had my body for 3 months, she was making the most of it.  This comment suggested that if I had signed a 6 month contract with her then my life might be initially easier.  This was funny to me as this was the reason I gave her 3 months and not just 1.  I could not imagine what would have happened if I gave her a shorter period.

Weight

This morning’s weigh in found me down 2.3 lbs. from last week.  This brings the overall total to 14.3 lbs.  I was concerned about this week’s weigh in since I had pasta the last 2 nights.  In the end though I kept pace with the last 2 weeks.

I still have 9 weeks left in this project.  I am getting a little too comfortable with the morning exercise and the wife has hinted at a change coming up (less aerobic, more weights).  I guess I will find out when I find out.

The Listening Project–Week 26

Well another week has passed by and I was able to get through a few more CDs in my listening project.  I made great progress this week just like last week and was able to get through 47 CDs (tying last week for the record) and managed to stay ahead of the pace for my 20 per week goal despite purchasing (32) more CDs on Saturday night from the same local thrift store that I visited last week.  You can reference this blog entry for details about this project.  Here are the CDs I knocked off of my list this week.

601 Switchfoot Oh! gravity 1/28/2012 Yes

Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

  • Loreena McKennitt ”The Book of Secrets”: I swear I used to own this CD at one time but I picked it up (again) for $0.99 (1 penny under my budget) at the Resale shop (along with 31 other CDs).  Very Enya-ish sounding and I think this did generate a minor hit on the radio (The Mummers Dance was a top 20 song here in the US).
  • P.I.D. “Born With The Gift”: Not to be confused with P.O.D., these guys (Preachers In Disguise) were one of the earlier Christian rap groups.  They have enough funk and horns to sound a bit like Arrested Development (though they might predate them).
  • Enigma “The Cross Of Changes”: With the purchases last Saturday night I crossed over the 1,000 mark for quantity of CDs owned.  One problem (you might have guessed this) with having this many CDs is remembering which CDs you own.  I have most of Enigma’s releases but something told me that I was missing this one and I was right.
  • Harry Connick Jr. “Eleven”: A rerelease of an album recorded when Harry was 11 (hence the title).  I might not have bought this had I known this at the time of purchase but it is pretty good (and he only sings on one song, thankfully).
  • Various Artists “Glee - The Music, Season One, Volume 2”: I have volumes 1 and 3 that I found in a pawn shop in Kokomo so imagine my surprise when volume 2 showed up in the thrift shop’s pile!  I feel complete now unless of course there is a volume 4 out there that I do not know about.
  • ApologetiX “Grace Period”: Think of this group as a Weird Al knock off only they change the lyrics of songs and write in Bible stories.  It is not really that good but I give it a YES solely for the “Baa Baa Baa We’re Lambs” version of “Barbara Ann”.
  • Barry Manilow “The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties”: My Barry Manilow CD count has gone from 0 to 2 in only a few weeks.  This one has songs that I know from the 50’s and is a pleasant listen.
  • Shakira “Laundry Service”: Don’t judge me!  It was only 99 cents.
  • Prince and The New Power Generation “Love Symbol Album”: I give this a MAYBE (like a NIN album in the past) due to the excessive use of profanity.  If he released a formatted for radio version of this then I would give it a YES for sure.
  • The Smashing Pumpkins “Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness Disc 1 & 2”: Both my manager and a co-worker praised my purchase of this double CD.  I think it needs a few more listenings to appreciate it like they do.
  • Tonio K “Notes From A Lost Civilization”: I first discovered this artists on his previous (to this one) release (Romeo Unchained, which I own on CD and LP).  I was more intrigued by the record label (What? Records) and its approach to take Christian themed music to the mainstream audience.  In the end, only 4 albums were released by this label and Tonio K was 2 of them.  Mark Heard’s “Ideola” project (which I have on LP) and Dave Perkin’s “The Innocence” (which I used to have on cassette) was the other.  Dave went on to join Chagall Guevara (with Steve Taylor).
  • Various Artists “Now 5 & Now That's What I Call Music 3, 5, & 9): These releases supposed contain all hit songs and at the average cost of a nickel per song I guess that is a pretty good deal.
  • KLANK “numb”: I was to this CD during the day on Friday when I was working from home and the wife heard it from the bathroom while she was fixing her hair.  She immediately recognized KLANK’s style (she hates KLANK).  I was impressed nonetheless.
  • U2 “October (Remastered)”: I allowed myself to break a rule and not listen to the standard release of “October” which I also own on CD.  Disc 1 of this remastered version is essentially the same songs only cleaned up a bit.
  • David Meece “Odyssey”: This is a best of release and is awesome.  David’s voice is really great to listen to and he is a very accomplished pianist.  I do have a live LP by him as well.
  • Lanny Cordola “Of Riffs And Symphonies”: I have had this CD since before I was married.  I would program the milder songs of this mostly instrumental guitar music into my portable CD player and play them over and over as my girlfriend / fiancé / now wife and I sat on the couch.  I kept the TV on a cart in the other room and only rolled it out when needed (which was not much).  Ah, memories.
  • Switchfoot “Oh! gravity”: I guess that “Oh!” comes before “Oh,” alphabetically since “Oh, My Nola” comes after this CD (that I am listening to as I write this blog).  This is the 3rd Switchfoot CD in the last 2 weeks to make the list.

Well I am 60% of the way done now and going strong.  I have a workshop next week at work that will require me to be in meetings from Monday at noon until Friday at noon so I should make a smaller amount of progress.  Assuming that I do not buy any more CDs (a bad assumption) and assuming I keep up the torrid pace of 40+ CDs per week then I could be done in 10 weeks.

    Outsourcing My Body–Week 3

    Well, It has been three weeks since I outsourced my body.  This week was much easier than last week as my body got used to the exercise video that I do each morning.  On to this week’s summary…

    Diet

    Not much changed in my diet from week two.  I stuck to the plan of 4 smaller meals each day and kept to a routine for the days that I worked (an apple around 11 AM and a can of soup around 2 PM).  Saturday found me eating out at a restaurant for the first time this year.  The son and I were attending an all day event and there was only an hour long break for lunch.  I ended up eating a wrap at Chili’s that had chicken, lettuce, avocado, corn and few other things.  This was served with steamed broccoli.  I still only drank my allotted coffee each morning and a gallon water each day.

    Exercise

    I continued to do the 30 Day Shred video that I started last week.  This week was much easier though I still am having trouble getting through some of the exercises without taking a small break while the girls on the video complete the cycle.  I was allowed to take Sunday morning off last week as the wife is evidently going to allow me 1 day off per week.  I traded today for yesterday and took Saturday off as well since the son and I had to be on the road by 7:30 or so.

    Other

    I had complained of a slight pain in my neck so the wife made an appointment with her chiropractor for me.  I had not been to a chiropractor in a while and based on the amount of adjusting he did, I was in the need of one.  Also, the subject of plucking my eyebrows came up again (when I asked about a haircut).

    Weight

    This morning’s weigh in found me down 2 lbs. from last week.  This brings the overall total to 12 lbs.  My jeans and Dockers are fitting a little better now.  I have a few pairs of pants in the closet that I abandoned a while back so it might be time to think about trying them on again and getting them back into the wardrobe.

    With 10 more weeks left in this project I still find myself with the proper attitude.  It is a chore some days to get all the water down but so far I have not missed my daily quota of a gallon.  I joked a bit with the wife about renewing her contract at the end of the 3 months.  She got a little too excited for my taste.

    Well another week has passed by and I was able to get through a few more CDs in my listening project.  I really made progress this week and was able to get through 47 CDs (a new record) and managed to move comfortably ahead of the pace for my 20 per week goal despite purchasing (6) more CDs on Thursday from a local thrift store.  You can reference this blog entry for details about this project.  Here are the CDs I knocked off of my list this week.

    Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

    • Argyle Park “Misguided”: I listened to this last Saturday after posting the weekly update blog for this project.  This is another industrial band and I think it is a hard to get CD.
    • Ray Boltz “Moments For The Heart Vol 1 &2”: Ray Boltz’s music leans heavily on your religious emotions so you either like his music or hate it.  Then there is me in that I like a few of his songs and can leave the rest.  I have always liked the song “Thank You” and even sang it once as a solo in a Sunday morning church service.  The song is entirely fictional based on interpretation of certain scriptures but I still like it.
    • Ty Tabor “Moonflower Lane”: Ty is part of a group I like named King’s X.  This CD is similar to the normal King’s X type of music but maybe a little softer.
    • Various Artists “Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat Annihilation”: I have never played the video game Mortal Kombat nor have I seen the movies but the music on these 2 soundtracks is right up my alley.  Part dance and part industrial.  There is even a Megadeth remix in there as well.
    • Amy Grant “My Father’s Eyes”: This might be the first time that I have listened to this CD all the way through.  It was released in 1976 and really sounds like it.  The daughter is practicing the title track to sing in church the next time we head back to Kokomo, IN.
    • Creed “My Own Prison”: There are a few wicked turns during this listening project where there are 2 CDs back to back that are so different that it would make you head spin.  Going from 1970’s Amy Grant to Creed is one of those turns.
    • Various Artists “Never Say Dinosaur”: This is a tribute album to the Christian rock group Petra.  It is on this release that I first heard of the group The Walter Eugenes as they cover “Judas Kiss” in a quirky manner.  I also discovered a group called Galactic Cowboys (they cover “Not Of This World” quite well).  Sixpence None The Richer covers “Road to Zion very well (I have never met a Sixpence song that I didn’t like though).  The title of this CD is a play one the title of one of Petra’s earlier releases (“Never Say Die”) and the fact that the original Petra members are quite old by now.
    • Carly Simon “Coming Around Again” This is one of the CDs I bought on Thursday.  I did not get them ripped until I got home so they did not immediately get into the rotation.  I did listen to one of the new (to me) CDs out of order as well.  I love Carly’s voice and this CD does not disappoint.
    • Nitro Praise “Nitro Praise Christmas”: This almost got a maybe.  On the one hand it is forgettable versions of standard Christmas songs only to a dance beat and there is the fact that the 8 songs are available in 2 formats: standard and karaoke version.  On the other hand, it is Christmas music and I will likely whip it out next Christmas just to mix things up.

    I have started listening to a lot more music as you might have gathered from the fact that I listened to 47 CDs this week.  I have a little device that plugs into the cigarette lighter of the car and will broadcast your mp3 player to a radio station.  This allows me to listen to a CD to and from work on the days I go into the office.  Also, I have started playing music while we are preparing dinner as well as during my morning workout (muting the workout DVD as I tired of the workout host trying to push me on throughout the routine).  With the progress made in the last 2 weeks I am now 54 CDs ahead of schedule.  I am now at 57.1% complete for this project.

      If–Then–Else and Wooden Spoons

      The kids alternate emptying the dishwashing machine.  The son gets Mon / Wed / Fri and the daughter gets Tue / Thu / Sat (or maybe it is the other way around) and the wife or I take the remaining day.  You may recall that I have had issues with dishwashers in the past.  The dishwasher that is in the house we are currently leasing is a little insufficient for our dish washing needs but that is not why I am writing this blog post.  This post has to do with little wooden spoons and my morning coffee routine.

      The wife and I get up well before the kids every morning.  I am usually up first and have a routine involving letting all the dogs out and putting water in our tea kettle to use to make French press coffee.  I measure a French press’ worth of water and put it in the tea kettle.  I turn on the burner and place said tea kettle on it.  While I am waiting for it to boil I put two scoops of coffee into the French press (at times I may need to grind more coffee first since we buy it in whole bean form).  I then grab our coffee cups out of the dishwasher (though we have many coffee cups we tend to use the same ones each morning) and prep them with the correct amount of sugar (raw) and cream (half and half) and await the water to come to a boil.  Once the whistle starts on the tea kettle, I turn off the burner and then pour the hot water into the French press until it is about 2/3 of the way full.  It is then that I have to start the hunt for the small wooden spoon that I use to stir the water before filling the French press to the top and setting the timer on the stove to the 6 minutes it takes to steep the coffee.

      Every other part of the morning routine (even down to the amount of time the dogs spend outside) is predictable and can be done with little or no thought to the actual steps (a little dangerous toward the end given that there is boiling water involved) but the wooden spoon portion is the wild card in the process.  First, let me explain why we use a wooden spoon as opposed to a metal one.

      I think I want to be a coffee nerd so I have done a little research on the proper way to make French press coffee.  This led us to buying coffee beans rather than coffee that was already ground (and a coffee grinder).  I arrived at the 6 minute steeping time based on other research and somewhere along the way I read (probably as a side thought to some article) that you should never use a metal spoon to stir the coffee while it is in the French press.  We happen to have several (three I think) smaller wooden spoons that we did not use for much of anything and they were the perfect size for stirring the coffee.  Each of these spoons have become somewhat stained from the actual spoon portion and all the way up the handle to a point that coincides with 2/3 of the depth of the French press carafe (the amount in the French press when I stir the coffee).  OK, now on to the issue at hand.

      Even though we have moved several times since we began our use of the French press, our kitchen drawer situation has been pretty consistent, specifically where our silverware and utensils are stored.  We have the standard drawer where silverware is placed with the normal plastic molded container that indicates where knives, spoons and forks go and we have a lazy Susan like container that sits on the counter next to the stove where some of the more commonly used utensils should go.  Things like spatulas, whisks, vegetable peelers, etc. are placed in this for easy access.  It is in this thing that I expect the small wooden spoons to be since they are used every day.  We have a few other drawers that contain items that are too big to be placed in the the lazy Susan.  This would include the roller (for rolling out bread or cookie dough), the wine cork opener thingy, our oversized pizza cutter, etc.  These are the drawers you dig in when looking for that not oft used device.  There is probably a 50/50 chance you would injure yourself if you are not careful (not that I have ever poked myself in the hand with the wine cork opener, I am just saying that is is possible to hurt yourself mind you).

      For some reason lately, I spend a lot of time looking for these wooden spoons during my coffee making routine each morning.  Given that I have just awoken and given that some drawers have the possibility (I am told) to cause bodily harm if you do not have your wits about you, one could see where one might be upset if one had to spend too much time in search of a needed tool used in the craft of morning coffee making.  It is hard enough to find these wooden spoons in the lazy Susan given that these spoons are smaller then most of the other things that are stored there, but add to the mix that they might not even be there and the fact that I am probably only 10 minutes removed from slumber and you could see how this could be irritating.  I have tried complaining to the help (aka kids) but they have not improved in the placement of these spoons.  The problem I think is that they are too much like me and need a detailed list of instructions that are logical in order to be able to do the job properly.  By the way, this is why I do not help with the sorting of the laundry.  The wife has failed to make any logical sense why one shirt goes with the lights or darks or why some items of clothing are put in the dryer and others are hung up to dry.  The day I see the rhyme and reason to this madness is the day I offer to help.  Perhaps this can be part II to this blog.

      Anyway, I have thought about this for the past few weeks (usually while digging through drawers looking for wooden spoons, silently cursing under my breath from small puncture wounds one might get while dong this) and have decided to see if some sort of instructions would help out.  Since the only set of instructions that I know are the ones I use to program, my instructions will have to be in that format.

      Sub StoragePlace (utensil as string) as string
        If utensil = “wooden spoon” Then
          StoragePlace = “Lazy Susan”
        Else
          NormalPlacementofItems()
      End Sub

      Since they do a pretty good job with every other item and finding it it’s proper home, I could just reference that imbedded subroutine “NormalPlacementofItems()”.  Now, this first version met my immediate needs but caused a little bit of a problem in that the kids would have too much fun sticking things randomly where they do not belong since that subroutine is not properly documented.  I had to be more thorough (like any good coder would) and capture all the possibilities.  I won’t bore you with the details but here are the end results keeping in mind that I am only referencing the items currently in my household and the drawers allotted me.  I had to assign some attributes to each item rather than call them out by name (for example, the wooden spoon would have the attributes of UtensilType = “spoon” and UtensilAttribute = “wood”).

      Sub StoragePlace (UtensilType As String, UtensilAttribute As String)

        If UtensilType = "Spoon" Then

          If UtensilAttribute = "Metal" Then
            StoragePlace = "Silverware Drawer"
          ElseIf UtensilAttribute = "Wood" Or UtensilAttribute = "Plastic" Then
            StoragePlace = "Lazy Susan"
          Else
            StoragePlace = "Misc Drawer 1"
          End If

        ElseIf UtensilType = "Fork" Then

          If UtensilAttribute = "Metal" Then
            StoragePlace = "Silverware Drawer"
          Else
            StoragePlace = "Misc Drawer 1"
          End If

        ElseIf UtensilType = "Knife" Then

          If UtensilAttribute = "Steak" Then
            StoragePlace = "Silverware Drawer"
          ElseIf UtensilAttribute = "Bread" Then

          Else
            StoragePlace = "Misc Drawer 1"
          End If

        ElseIf UtensilType = "Other" Then

          If UtensilAttribute = "Plastic" Then
            StoragePlace = "Lazy Susan"
          ElseIf UtensilAttribute = "Metal" Then
            StoragePlace = "Misc Drawer 2"
          End If

        Else

          StoragePlace = Randomize()

        End If

      End Sub

      Now, to all of you coders out there I know this is not perfect but it is a start.  It is probably enough to get the kids going anyway.  I imagine they will do the research and point out flaws (kids like to prove their dad wrong I hear).  That is ok, as long as the little wooden spoons are where they are supposed to be each morning.

      Outsourcing My Body–Week 2

      If I were to summarize this week with one word, that word would be “Owwwwwwwwwwww!”

      It has been two weeks since I outsourced my body.  This week was much tougher than week one as the wife cranked it up a notch in the exercise area.  On to this week’s summary…

      Diet

      Not much changed in my diet from week one.  We did have 3 kids spend the night (in addition to our two) this Friday and so we ordered pizza.  There is a pizza place within 2 minutes of our house and we tried them out in late December.  The pizza is pretty good and given the closeness it won a second try.  The wife allowed me 4 pieces (the pizza was not cut in the normal triangle slice so the pieces were small).  Other than that anomaly, I ate oatmeal almost every morning and took and apple and a can of healthy soup for my lunch.  Dinner was pretty good this week overall (a small steak one night, fish the next).  I had nothing to drink save for my allotted morning coffee and a gallon of water each day.

      Exercise

      First thing Sunday morning the wife had me start level 1 of the 30 day shred workout video that we have owned for quite some time.

      Jillian_

      Don’t let Jillian’s smile fool you, she is brutal.  The level one workout (which the wife mercifully let me start at) is 25 minutes of non stop workout.  I took a lot of breaks during day one (and two and three) but got through it.  My muscles protested almost constantly over the first four days.  There was a point on day three that I literally had to stop 1/2 way down my driveway on the way to my car as the decline was causing a lot of pain in my calf and upper leg muscles.  I dreaded doing this each day.  The wife joined me on a few days but the other days she watched me do this workout and took it upon herself to point out my flawed way of doing some of the exercises (thanks dear!).  By days six and seven though it was getting easier and I took less breaks during the workout and the pain that I experienced in almost all of my muscles was much more manageable.

      Other

      I would like to share this chart with you…

      OutsourcingChart1

      As you might imagine, drinking a gallon of water a day has certain effects on my body.  Another thing we tried this week (and this was my doing more so than the wife’s) was to get more sleep.  You can check out this blog entry for more details.  The better diet, more exercise and additional sleep has got me feeling great.

      Weight

      After losing 8.2 lbs. during the first week I had a fear that this week’s Sunday morning weigh in would be disappointing.  I held no hope to match last week’s results of course (well maybe in my dreams).  Today’s weigh in had me down another 1.8 lbs. for a total of 10 lbs.  That is still not too shabby when you look at it that way.

      I still have 11 more weeks in this project but I think the worst of the initial shock to my body is over.  That is until I am forced to move to level 2 on the Jillian video.

      Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

      • R.E.M “Automatic For The People” & “Green” ^ “Life's Rich Pageant”: All of these CDs were finds from my Saturday trip.  Until that day, surprisingly, I only had one R.E.M. CD in my collection.  I know that I used to own “Green” on cassette in the past.  It seems to me that I used to own the “Automatic” one as well.  This is the first I had heard the “Life’s Rich Pageant” though.
      • John Cougar Mellencamp “Dance Naked”: I also bought three CDs by this artist bringing my total for 5 (some as John Mellencamp).  All good stuff.
      • Damn Yankees “Don’t Tread”: I did not realize that this group released more than one CD.  It has a few minor hits but is still a good listen if you like this genre.
      • D-Boy “The Lyrical Strength of One Street Poet”: I gave this mostly forgettable rap CD a YES solely for the song “Shout” which samples the song of the same name by the Isley Brothers.
      • Mad At The World “Mad At The World”: I have this on LP and did not realize until I found the CD release of this album that there were really 2 more songs.  Finding this CD in the bargain rack 10 years ago was pretty cool in that I got to hear those new (to me) songs.
      • Kurt Van Sickle “Make Me An Instrument” This CD contains a single, 60 minute long track of praise and worship music.  It about brought this whole project to s screeching halt.
      • Sam Phillips “Martinis & Bikinis”: I was very excited when I found this CD.  This artist released a few albums on Christian record labels as Leslie Phillips.  Later she crossed over to a secular label and started going by the name Sam.  I love her voice no matter the label.
      • Enigma “MCMXC A.D”: I remember when I first heard “Sadeness” off of this release.  I was working at a bowling alley as a mechanic and was walking by the bar when I saw the video for that song.  The mix of dance beats and Gregorian chant was amazing.
      • Russ Taff “Medals” Probably my favorite Russ Taff album.
      • Merchant Band “Merchant Band”: My son first heard this band on a compilation CD of live worship bands from IHOP (International House of Prayer).  He liked it so much we found it on CD and bought it for him as a gift.  There are some hits and misses here but overall a good release.
      • Altar Boys “Mercy Thoughts”: There was a record label called M8 that bought the rights to many out of print Christian releases and rereleased them.  They also worked with those artists to create new releases of never released material.  This is one of those releases.  Nothing is very high quality but I enjoy listening to it for nostalgia’s sake as Altar Boys were a band I enjoyed in my youth.
      • Hanson “Middle Of Nowhere”: I bought this for the kiddos.  It is decent enough to pull out and listen to occasionally.
      • Jack Jezzro & Sam Levine “Midnight Moon”: Very new age sounding and a good find when I took a chance on this duo that I had never heard of before.  I think I went solely by the album artwork and my gut.
      • Various Artists “Mindy's Revenge”: I have seen this 20 track album in tons of bargain bins and never bought it.  I only have this as it was given to me for free when I bought another CD.  No memorable tracks really other than a song by Chris Tomlin that I already have on a CD that I own by him.
      • Keith Green “Ministry Years Volume 1 Disc 1 & 2”: I used to own this and the 2nd dual CD release (volume 2) but gave them to my mother.  I found Volume 1 on a bargain rack and am hopeful to find the other volume.  Keith is an excellent piano player as well as songwriter.  He was killed all too early in his life in a plane crash in the 80’s.  I listened to disc 2 while writing this blog entry.

      Despite adding 15 CDs to the pile (my total is now 964), I am now 52.5% of the way complete.

        Sleep Debt

        I have a goal at work for 2012 that revolves around being more efficient and organized.  I have access (through my work) to an online site that has tons of books available so I picked a few that might help me with my goal.  The first one that I started reading is called “The 26 Hour Day”.  It is subtitled “How to Gain at Least 2 Hours a Day with Time Control”.  One of the chapters that I was reading this week was about being more efficient by getting enough sleep.  The basic premise being that you can be more productive if you are well rested.

        In this chapter he states that most people need 8 hours a night of sleep.  On a good night I might get 7 so I began to think of ways of getting more sleep.  Since getting up later does not work very well I had to focus on going to bed earlier.  I need to get up around 5:30 AM in order to get in some coffee time with the wife, exercise time, shower time and drive time to the office.  That would put me in bed by 9:30 PM which just seems too early.

        We put the kids to bed around 9:00 PM (that is to say, they have to go to their bedrooms by that time and have to be in bed by 9:45 or so).  This leaves very little time after the kid’s bedtime for the wife and I to do much of anything (we usually watch a TV show then head to bed).  For the past two nights, after chatting and praying with each of the kids, the wife and I headed to the bedroom (after letting all the dogs our for one last time) and get settled into bed.  I thought I would have a problem falling asleep but it was not a problem the last two nights.  I woke up around 3:30 AM both nights but was able to fall back asleep until the alarm went off.  So far, so good.

        One other thing the author of this book mentioned was something called Sleep Debt.  The idea being that you “owe” your body 8 hours of sleep each night and if you get less than that then you incur a sleep debt that you have to pay back (he mentioned nothing of interest on the debt).  Over time, a person can amass a very large sleep debt that must be repaid.  I checked out the Wikipedia page for Sleep Debt and there is debate on this idea of course.  Whether or not the science is sound, I like the concept of Sleep Debt on the surface and my going to bed earlier each night is my attempt not to pile up any more debt.

        I have felt better over the last few days.  That might be due to the Outsourcing of My Body to the wife but I think in no small way that the extra sleep is doing me good as well.  The wife is loving it.  She usually falls asleep 1/2 way through the TV show anyway but refuses (for reasons that I cannot grasp) to go to bed without me.  If anything, she is running a sleep surplus (just kidding dear).

        Outsourcing My Body–Week 1

        Well it has been one week since I outsourced my body.  As you may recall, I decided that I did not want to worry about what or what not to eat and what type and how much of exercise to do.  I have outsourced that to the wife for three months and she has had this job for one week now.

        Last Sunday I weighed myself so that I had a starting point.  I plan on weighing myself on each Sunday morning and then reporting that and anything else of interest in a weekly blog (this being the first).  In my blog describing this plan, I explained that my original intent was to let the wife control my diet and exercise but she immediately went past that and into thoughts of hair color and eyebrow maintenance.  I will break down my thoughts in the following areas each week.

        Diet

        The wife has been working out for a few months now.  In that time she has changed what she has been eating and how she is eating it.  Cutting out some bad foods is a given but she has been eating four to five smaller meals per day (approximately 300 calories each) rather than three meals.  She immediately converted me to this schedule.  I ate a bowl of oatmeal almost every morning with honey and some trail mix on top.  I drank a few protein shakes when I worked from home and mostly ate a large apple or bowl of soup when at work.  Then there is water.  She has me drinking one gallon of water each day.  She handed me this quart size glass jar (I think it used to hold tomato juice originally) and I drink four of those per day.  It is mildly annoying to have to drink this much water.  When you put more water in your body, more water has to come out (and I am not talking about sweating here).  Anyway, she swears by this method and since she is calling the shots I drank seven gallons of water over the past week.  Other than an allotted two cups of coffee each morning (enjoyed with the wife), water is the only other thing that I drank.

        Exercise

        Knowing that I was hopelessly out of shape, she took it easy on me the first week.  Basically I walk between one and two miles each morning.  I accomplish this by taking the dogs for a walk (one at a time) around a 0.6 mile route around the neighborhood.  The dogs love it and it has not been the cold that has bothered me as much as the light.  Since the days are so short, I need to start my walking before the sunrise or else I will be late getting into the office.  I threw in an extra lap or two on our new bikes for good measure but mostly this week I focused on getting my body used to the concept of exercise.

        Other

        There is not much to mention here.  So far the eyebrows are as they were a week ago and my hair color is as well.  I tried several times to get to a clothing store over the Christmas break to buy some pants (mine are slightly tight to the point of being uncomfortable) and the wife did suggest that I wait.

        Weight

        I think I will avoid mentioning my exact weight in this blog but I can tell you that (and even I find this hard to believe) I am down 8.2 lbs. since my January 1 weigh in!  I think this number is so high based on the fact that day one was right after a New Year’s Eve evening of eating and drinking things that are not in my diet any longer.  The massive amount of water I have been drinking might help here as well.  For whatever reason, it is what it is.  I hold no expectations that this trend will continue and I imagine next week’s weigh in will give a better assessment of how fast I will be shedding the 40 or so lbs. that I would like to lose.

        All in all it was an easy week.  I was tempted at times by some of the commercials during the football games but not really since the wife would not let me have them anyway.  I have drank only water and coffee this week but I do not really miss soda or even sweet tea (yet).  The great thing about this plan of mine is that it doesn’t matter if I want any of these things or not, the wife is in charge of those decisions.

        469 Honey Lovely 1/7/2012 Yes

        Here are my thoughts on a few of these CDs that I have listened to over the past week…

        • Jeff Silvey “Little Bit of Faith”: There are not that many country releases on Christian record labels but this is one of them.
        • Lou Bega “A Little Bit of Mambo”: Is it just me or does every song on this album sound exactly the same?
        • Steven Curtis Chapman “The Live Adventure”: And so starts a 4 CD stretch of live CDs.  I have given a few SCC albums a NO and I am not usually a fan of live releases but this one is has a funny section where he plays one of his hit songs in several genres.
        • Burlap To Cashmere “Live at the Bitter End”: This only has 5 songs on it (all from their first album) but these guys are awesome live.
        • Cher “Live: The Farewell Tour”: This has a good mix of Cher songs and covers (including U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”).  This is really disc 2 of a set with disc 1 being a regular “best of” release.
        • Steve Taylor “Liver”: Steve does not sound that good live but the 2 times I saw him in concert it was a blast.  What he lacks in singing talent he makes up for in stage antics.  He covers a few tunes from his side project band Chagall Guevara as well.
        • Grammatrain “Lonely House”: The first Christian grunge band I ever heard.  Pretty good.
        • Cruse “Long Journey Home”: Sandwiched between Cinderella and Poison on this week’s list, this band (consisting of the brothers and sisters of the Cruse family) seems out of place.  I forget where I found it but I tend to buy and CD on a Christian label from 1986 since that was when the Christian record labels first started toying with the idea of releasing albums on CD.  I remember selling a few finds for $40 or so on eBay.  This one I kind of like though so I decided to keep it.
        • August Burns Red “Looks Fragile After All”: I am not a fan of death metal but I think I want to be.  I have a few CDs of this genre but they are all getting NOs so far.  Maybe I should just give up on this type of music.
        • Tait “Lose This Live”: Former member of DC Talk’s first release with his band (named simply Tait which is his last name).  He actually covers the 1982 song “Electric Avenue” as well as “The Christmas Song” (which we listened to last month a few times).
        • Pearl Jam “Lost Dogs 1 and 2”: There are enough cool songs on each disc to warrant a YES here but I have not been a fan of Pearl Jam really other than their “Ten” album.
        • Vince Ebo “Love Is The Better Way”: Vince sang back up on a lot of Charlie Peacock releases.  This is his only solo release.  Charlie (as well as Jimmy Abegg from Vector) join in on a few songs.
        • Charlie Peacock “Love Life”: If it were not for the song “In The Light” I think I might not like this release really well.  I currently have “In The Light” as my cell phone’s ringtone (thanks to Audacity).
        • Keith Urban “Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing”: If you notice the Date column you will see today’s date.  Up until this week I have limited my listening to working hours.  I did not make it a requirement that I listen to songs during work so I listened to this during breakfast.
        • Honey “Lovely”: And listened to this one while writing this blog entry.

        I am now 49.4% of the way done and will almost certainly reach the 1/2 way point during the coming week.
